Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
General Summary
Responsible for performing routine and emergency maintenance on analog electrical, electronic and pneumatic equipment and networks used to collect, process, transmit, receive and record data, and to regulate the operation of the final control elements in wastewater treatment and water operation processes; perform periodic inspections, testing, adjustments, calibrations and servicing activities necessary to assure the proper operation of process instrumentation and control systems in the wastewater treatment and water operation process;
perform maintenance on pumps, motors and other mechanical equipment related to water and wastewater operations; perform acceptance tests of new equipment and inspect the installation of equipment and systems for conformance with plans and specifications; order supplies and prepare maintenance service reports; perform specialized staff work related to control systems; may train new employees and other technical personnel in the maintenance of control systems.
Work requires limited supervision and independent judgment and discretion.
- Installs, programs, inspects, troubleshoots, and adjusts electrical and mechanical equipment, instrumentation, and related information systems.
- Performs tests and maintenance on mechanical, electrical, and instrumentation equipment; interprets readings and outputs of equipment; ensures proper functioning of equipment and related information systems.
- Reviews operator’s manuals and other established guidelines; ensures equipment and information systems are operated in accordance with established guidelines.
- Performs basic programming for utilities information systems; programs with ladder logic and relay logic; operates PLCs, RTUs and associated inputs/outputs; operates VFDs; performs telecommunications networking.
- Ensures proper operation of SCADA system; identifies and troubleshoots issues pertaining to SCADA system.
- Initiates work orders pertaining to utilities equipment and information systems; ensures work orders are accurate and complete; performs record-keeping functions.
- Serves as a liaison to manufacturers, contractors, City personnel and other internal or external parties with respect to utilities equipment, instruments, and related systems.
- Performs work with relative independence and judgment with initiative required to meet department operating requirements and process abnormalities.
- Uses safe working practices in the performance of duties and ensure proper safety practices are used by all operators.
- Complies and reviews a variety of work orders, work sheets, reports, and/or other related information.
- Assists other departments and performs other duties as assigned.
- Organizes work assignments and sets priorities.
- Performs and/or assists with work on water and wastewater systems and related equipment as necessary.
- Responds to emergency callouts and must reside within a reasonable response time.
- Contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of the services to customers by offering suggestions and directing or participating as an active member of a team.
- Represents the City with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
- Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work hours is essential.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Industrial electronic control systems.
- Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
- Record keeping practices, both electronic and hard copy.
- Understanding of public works principles, practices and techniques for water operations and construction, and safety procedures and techniques.
- Understanding of computers and related equipment, hardware, and software.
- Basic programming and design for public utilities information systems, and basic trade mathematics.
- The National Electric Code.
