An elementary physical education (PE) teacher plans and implements engaging, age-appropriate physical activities (Pre K-5) to develop motor skills, promote physical fitness, and teach healthy habits. Responsibilities include designing, organizing, and supervising games, sports, and fitness activities, ensuring a safe environment, assessing student progress, and maintaining equipment.
Key Responsibilities and Duties
* Curriculum Planning & Instruction:
Design, develop, and implement, age-appropriate PE curriculum that aligns with state standards (e.g., TEKS). Teach fundamental movement skills,, sports,, and fitness activities.
* Instructional Delivery:
Lead daily physical education classes, promoting maximum activity time and student participation. Teach sportsmanship, teamwork, and positive attitudes toward physical activity.
* Safety & Supervision:
Maintain a safe, clean environment by inspecting equipment and facilities. Supervise students in the gymnasium, playground, or fields.
* Assessment & Recording:
Evaluate student performance, skills, and progress to provide constructive feedback. Maintain accurate records and report student grades.
* Health Promotion:
Educate students on the importance of nutrition, exercise, and a healthy lifestyle.
* Collaboration:
Work with other school staff to coordinate school-wide events, such as field days or fitness programs.
Required Qualifications & Skills
* Education & Certification:
Bachelor's degree in Physical Education or related field and valid state-required teacher certification.
* Communication:
Strong interpersonal skills to interact effectively with students, parents, and staff.
* Management:
Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage large groups of children in high-energy settings.
* Physical Ability:
Ability to demonstrate skills, set up equipment, and actively participate in physical activities.
Common Tasks
* Setting up and maintaining gym equipment (cones, balls, mats).
* Adapting lessons for students with varying abilities and special needs.
* Supervising recess or lunch, as required.
* Participating in required professional development training.
