Payroll Accountant, Lead – Southland Industries

Position Summary

The Lead Payroll Accountant will assist the Payroll Manager and team with the responsibility of all aspects of payroll operations and administration, ensuring timely and accurate payments and compliance with Federal and State/Local tax regulatory requirements, and all Collective Bargaining agreements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Payroll Manager with full payroll operations and administration, ensuring compliance with tax regulations and Collective Bargaining agreements.
  • Perform end‑to‑end payroll processing across multiple states and unions.
  • Support payroll system maintenance, including updating tables and employee records.
  • Collaborate with IT and HR departments to resolve system issues.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to internal departments and external customers.
  • Maintain accurate financial recordkeeping, recording financial transactions, managing accounts, reconciling accounts and ensuring compliance with GAAP.
  • Assist with mentoring junior payroll staff, delegating tasks, and developing training programs.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of payroll software and support overall maintenance.
  • Travel to other Southland payroll team locations in Texas if required.
  • Handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance or equivalent experience preferred.
  • 5+ years of payroll experience, full-cycle payroll processing and multi-state payrolls.
  • Experience with large payrolls and payroll software (COINS, ADP, Dayforce, UKG, or in‑house solutions).
  • In-depth understanding of payroll practices, tax regulations, wage and hour laws.
  • FPC or CPP certification is a plus.
  • Prior experience with union payrolls, prevailing wage and certified payroll reporting.
  • COINS ERP software knowledge is a plus.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills, ability to multi‑task in a deadline‑driven environment.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and innovative problem‑solving.
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.
  • Computer proficiency with intermediate to expert level Excel, MS Word, PowerPoint, Access, etc.
  • Good verbal, written, and active listening communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and customer‑service skills; ability to interact with all levels of employees.
  • Team collaboration skills; ability to transfer knowledge to junior staff.
  • Travel to Southland payroll locations in Texas may be required.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Intermediate accounting knowledge.
  • Experience with external audits.
