Special Instructions

Annual stipend: $8,000 for supervisory responsibilities.

Teaching load:

Fall and Spring: Teach three‑fifths (3/5) load and receive a two‑fifths (2/5) release for the performance of chair duties.

Summer: Teach 1 course or 48 contact hours and receive a 1 course or 48 contact hour release for the performance of chair duties.

Position Summary

The Department Chair provides academic leadership and administrative oversight for assigned instructional programs. This position is responsible for faculty supervision and evaluation, curriculum and assessment oversight, scheduling and staffing, accreditation compliance, budget management, and implementation of student success initiatives. The Department Chair ensures instructional quality, regulatory compliance, and alignment with the College of the Mainland’s mission, strategic priorities, and workforce and transfer pathways.

Qualifications
  • Educational and experiential background that qualifies the individual to teach in any discipline or program within the College of the Mainland.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of successful full‑time teaching experience.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of successful management or leadership experience.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of full‑time employment at College of the Mainland.

Job Duties

Academic Administration

  • Plan, develop, and administer departmental course schedules and instructional assignments.
  • Ensure compliance with instructional standards, including syllabi, learning management system requirements, textbook adoption timelines, grading, and census reporting.
  • Address instructional concerns, classroom issues, and faculty–student disputes in accordance with institutional policies.

Supervision, Evaluation & Development

  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate full‑time and part‑time faculty.
  • Conduct annual faculty evaluations, classroom observations, online course reviews, and performance assessments using established institutional procedures.
  • Coordinate onboarding and mentoring of new faculty.
  • Identify performance deficiencies and implement corrective actions in collaboration with the dean and Human Resources.
  • Recognize and support faculty excellence and continuous improvement.

Human Resources Support

  • Assess departmental personnel needs and submit staffing recommendations.
  • Participate in recruitment, screening, and interview processes; chair or serve on search committees.
  • Facilitate curriculum development, revision, and approval processes.
  • Oversee assessment of student learning outcomes, program outcomes, and institutional effectiveness measures.
  • Develop and implement strategies to improve student success, completion, workforce placement, and transfer outcomes.
  • Ensure alignment of programs with workforce, industry, and transfer pathways.

Accreditation, Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies and accreditation standards, including SACSCOC requirements.
  • Verify faculty credentialing in accordance with accreditation and institutional guidelines.
  • Prepare, review, and submit reports supporting accreditation, program review, and regulatory compliance.

Budget & Resource Management

  • Prepare, administer, and monitor the departmental budget.
  • Review and approve purchases of goods and services in accordance with procurement policies.
  • Ensure responsible stewardship and documentation of departmental resources.

Communication & External Relations

  • Facilitate regular department meetings and maintain effective communication with faculty, staff, students, and administrators.
  • Serve on institutional committees, councils, and task forces as assigned.
  • Participate in advisory committee meetings and represent the department and institution in internal and external events, including dual credit collaborations.
  • Review catalog, website, and program materials for accuracy and submit update requests.
