Position Title Veterans Coordinator & School Certifying Official

Contract Length 12 months

Class Summary

Reporting to the Dean of Student Success, the Coordinator of Veterans Center, will serve as the leading campus authority for Veterans services initiatives throughout the campus and will work with multiple internal, and community agencies, and programs to provide outreach and services to student veterans. Serves and advocates for Veteran students and Veteran connected families and has duties across and throughout all divisions on the campus to create and provide resources, training, and leadership initiatives.

This leadership position will draw on an extensive knowledge of available resources about Veterans’ benefits and educational applications in addition to assisting student Veterans and dependents in applying for available programs and benefits. Will demonstrate a knowledge of current federal and state legislation relating to benefits for military service Veterans and their dependents in addition to developing programs and activities with other agencies rendering services to Veterans, establishing and maintaining satisfactory relationships with Veterans, Veteran groups, and government agencies.

The Veterans Coordinator/School Certifying Official is responsible for the effective administration of all federal veteran and State of Texas Hazlewood Exemption programs in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Minimum of two years of experience and leadership certifying and supporting student veterans in secondary or post-secondary education setting.
  • Current on annual School Certifying Official ( SCO ) training requirements.
  • Veteran status (including Commissioned Officer, Non-Commissioned officer, or retired Commissioned, Non-Commissioned officer).
  • Three (3) or more years of progressive experience and leadership certifying and supporting student veterans in secondary or post-secondary education setting.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable regulations, policies, and statutes related to benefits
  • Experience utilizing specialized computer programs and applications to certify benefits
  • Proficiency in use of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Complex or technical office practices and procedures, including ability to type, attention to detail with strong sense of urgency and time management
  • Self-motivated with strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks and coordinate multiple projects
  • Work requires use of initiative and judgment
  • Excellent proofreading and grammatical skills
  • Compiling and summarizing information and preparing periodic or special reports
  • Organizing own work, setting priorities and meeting critical deadlines
  • Maintain regular, prompt and reliable attendance
  • Strong communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public, sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction
  • Advanced skills in use of MS Outlook, Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Skilled at utilizing computer equipment and specialized computer programs and applications to certify benefits.

Job Duties

  • Hire, train, and supervise the Administrative Assistant (full-time), the Academic Advisor (full-time), and the work-study students (part-time).
  • Oversee and lead the certification process for military benefits, ensuring accurate and timely submission to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Advise Veterans, student Veterans, their families and dependents of their rights under military service benefits acts and other relevant legislation.
  • Serve as lead School Certifying Official ( SCO ) with the Veterans Administration, the Texas Veterans Commission, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for all veteran educational benefits; maintain compliance with state and federal regulations governing the application of military-connected education benefits.
