OverviewRaytheon is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to join the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) team. NASAMS is a cutting-edge air defense system that protects critical assets and population centers from aerial threats by integrating advanced radar, command and control, and missile systems. As a senior technical leader, you will oversee the design, development, testing, and deployment of mission-critical software that supports all aspects of the NASAMS system effectivity chain:
Detect, Decide, Engage, and Destroy. You will provide technical leadership across the full development lifecycle, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure program success. This position is based in Tewksbury, Massachusetts, where you’ll work collaboratively in an Agile and Dev Sec Ops environment to deliver high-quality, high-frequency software solutions that meet evolving customer needs.
- Lead the design, development, testing, and deployment of complex software solutions for NASAMS, ensuring alignment with mission-critical requirements.
- Analyze, implement, and test software modifications to enhance functionality, performance, and reliability.
- Drive the resolution of complex software trouble reports, leveraging debugging tools to identify and resolve issues while optimizing performance.
- Provide technical leadership in an Agile environment, driving continuous improvement initiatives and implementing industry best practices.
- Collaborate with systems engineers, integration and test engineers, and other stakeholders to define system requirements and ensure seamless integration of software components.
- Develop and maintain CI/CD pipelines and automation tools to enable efficient and reliable software delivery.
- Act as a technical mentor, delegating tasks, coaching junior and mid-level engineers, and fostering a culture of technical excellence.
- Represent the software team in program-level discussions, providing technical expertise and ensuring program objectives are met.
- Stay current with emerging technologies and methodologies, driving innovation and advancing the technical capabilities of the NASAMS team.
- Advanced radar and Command and Control systems concepts, including real-time, mission-critical processing.
- Strategies for optimizing software performance and scalability in large, complex systems.
- Agile and Dev Sec Ops best practices to improve software development, testing, and deployment processes.
- Leadership and mentorship techniques to foster collaboration and technical growth within the team.
- Cutting-edge tools and technologies for building and maintaining mission-critical software solutions.
- Detect:
Develop solutions for target acquisition, integrated IFF, and tracking updates. - Decide:
Implement Single Integrated Air Picture, threat evaluation, launcher assignment, and multi-missile handling. - Engage:
Create algorithms for azimuth slew, targeting data transfer, missile firing, and mission abort. - Destroy:
Support motor ignition, inertial guidance, seeker search, target lock-on, and terminal guidance.
- Typically requires a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience.
- Experience in programming languages (e.g., C++, Java).
- Experience with Agile and Dev Sec Ops methodologies and tools (e.g., CI/CD pipelines, Docker, Jenkins).
- Experience leading teams and resolving complex technical challenges.
- Ability to obtain U.S. government issued Secret security clearance is required after start date. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- Extensive experience with radar software development and/or radar concepts.
- Proven expertise in missile defense programs and working with large, complex systems.
