At CVS Health, we're building a world of health around every consumer and surrounding ourselves with dedicated colleagues who are passionate about transforming health care. As the nation's leading health solutions company, we reach millions of Americans through our local presence, digital channels and more than 300,000 purpose-driven colleagues - caring for people where, when and how they choose in a way that is uniquely more connected, more convenient and more compassionate.

A Medical Assistant (MA) with phlebotomy skills performs broader administrative and clinical duties, with blood drawing (venipuncture) being a key skill for collecting specimens, while a specialized Phlebotomist focuses solely on blood collection for tests, donations, or research, requiring precision and patient comfort skills. Both roles are crucial, involving patient education, sample handling, and working in various healthcare settings, but MAs manage a wider scope, whereas phlebotomists are experts in the specific technique of blood draws, with state regulations often dictating MA scope for blood collection.
Required QualificationsTo work as a Medical Assistant (MA) with phlebotomy skills, you generally need a high school diploma/GED, complete an accredited MA program with phlebotomy training
, gain hands‑on experience (including specific blood draws), and pass a certification exam, with states like CA, WA, NV, and LA requiring licensure; this dual role combines MA duties (vitals, charting, patient care) with specialized blood‑drawing expertise for efficiency.
May include background checks, drug screenings, physical exams, and proof of immunizations (like Hepatitis
B) and TB testing.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Training Program: Complete a recognized MA or Phlebotomy program (in‑person or online) covering both administrative/clinical MA skills and specialized phlebotomy techniques.
