Schedule

Day shift. Overtime and extended hours possible. Travel up to 10% of time.

Responsibilities
  • Safely operate Class C vehicles, single rear axle vehicles, and other state vehicles in accordance with agency and Texas Department of Transportation rules.
  • Deliver and pick up food and other cargo from warehouses and kitchens, ensuring proper loading, securing, and timely delivery.
  • Perform preventive maintenance checks before, during, and after operations; report any issues promptly.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of vehicle interior and exterior, following infection control and vehicle cleanliness guidelines.
  • Complete all required paperwork, logs, and reports related to vehicle operations, mileage, and maintenance.
  • Provide vehicle operation and safety training to new staff, including use of lift gates, pallet jacks, and other loading equipment.
  • Participate in disaster response, recovery, or continuity of operations (COOP) activations, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
Essential Job Functions
  • Attend work on a regular basis and may be scheduled for rotating, extended, or overtime shifts as per agency policy.
  • Operate vehicles safely and obey all state, federal, and local traffic laws.
  • Carry facility radio at all times on and off campus trips.
  • Perform operator vehicle preventive maintenance checks and complete detailed maintenance checklist on a weekly or monthly basis.
  • Process paperwork in accordance with local and state guidelines without significant errors or delays.
  • Ensure cargo is properly loaded, tied down, and within vehicle capacity limits.
  • Maintain certification for operating lifts, pallet jacks, forklifts, and other loading equipment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of safe motor vehicle operations and preventive maintenance.
  • Knowledge of safe cargo loading, unloading, storage, and securing methods.
  • Knowledge of TXDOT driving rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of infection control policies and laundering techniques.
  • Verbal and written communication skills with internal customers and external vendors.
  • Physical stamina, hand‑to‑eye coordination, and reflexes.
  • Ability to use lift gates, pallet jacks, forklifts, other loading equipment.
  • Ability to lift and carry 40–50 pounds and maneuver loaded food carts.
  • Ability to operate commercial scale equipment.
  • Ability to train others and identify problems and solutions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
  • Computer literate and able to use Office 365 and webmail.
  • Work in all weather conditions and safely operate vehicles with limited visibility.
Registrations, Licensure, and Certifications
  • Current, valid Texas Class C driver’s license or higher.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Two years of experience operating commercial motor vehicles.
Additional Information
  • Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aid, Medication Aide, and Employee Misconduct, List of Excluded Individuals/Entities).
  • All applicants must be at least 18 years old (21 years for Waco Center for Youth).
  • Applicants may be required to work overtime and extended hours.
  • Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures is required; employees are required to be vaccinated for hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, and influenza.

  • Telework not eligible for this position.
  • Position may require alternate shift patterns or locations during disaster response or COOP activation.
