Job Description

Join the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) where you will work in a supportive team dedicated to providing specialized care for Texans in need.
The Custodian II performs moderately complex (journey‑level) custodial work. Responsibilities include cleaning, dusting, disinfecting, and sanitizing to maintain a safe and healthy environment. You will operate floor‑maintenance equipment such as strippers, buffers, vacuums, and extractors, restock supplies, assist in building inspections, perform minor repairs and installations, and maintain outside areas around the hospital.
Core Responsibilities- Clean, dust, disinfect, and sanitize all assigned areas.
- Operate floor maintenance equipment safely and efficiently.
- Request and restock necessary supplies.
- Assist in inspections of buildings and equipment for cleanliness and repair needs.
- Perform minor building and equipment repairs and installations.
- Maintain assigned custodial equipment in good working order.
- Clear trash and debris from outside areas around the hospital.
- Work under general supervision with moderate latitude for initiative and independent judgment.
- Participate in disaster response and/or continuity of operations (COOP) as required, which may involve alternate shift patterns or locations.
- Attend work on a regular basis; may be required to work specific shift schedules, rotating schedules, extended shifts, or overtime in accordance with agency leave policy.
- Perform custodial functions timely with high quality, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, and cleaning windows and light fixtures.
- Ensure proper sanitization and disinfection per training received.
- Cleans and maintains floors, restrooms, nurses’ stations, and other areas following established procedures and safety measures.
- Empty trash, report needed repairs, and replenish supplies as required.
- Coach other custodians as needed.
- Inspect assigned buildings and areas for cleanliness, completed work, and needed minor repairs; perform minor maintenance.
- Complete documentation accurately and timely; protect confidential information; maintain inventory and equipment records.
- Help patients maintain optimal health and provide a safe environment for self, persons served, and others.
- Knowledge of cleaning methods, standards, and sanitation regulations.
- Knowledge of infection control principles and methods.
- Knowledge of inventory control principles and methods.
- Skills in using custodial equipment and materials safely, including chemical handling.
- Skills in using and maintaining building maintenance tools and equipment.
- Ability to stay on task and complete work in a timely manner.
- Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to stand/walk on hard floors for extended periods.
- Ability to work harmoniously and productively with co‑workers and patients.
- Ability to work irregular hours.
- Six months work experience required.
- Experience in custodial or environmental services work in a nursing home, hospital, residential facility, hotel or other similar residential equivalent preferred.
