CORRECTIONAL OFFICER 2* –

Location:

Department of Correction, West Tennessee State Penitentiary, La­uderdale County.

Position:
Two (2) positions available.

Salary and benefits: $5,000.00 sign‑on bonus payable over 18 months. A criminal background check and pre‑employment drug screening are required.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED and one (1) year of full‑time correctional officer experience with the Tennessee Department of Correction, a federal or state agency, or a locally accredited agency. Experience may be substituted for education on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Must be at least 18 years old, a U.S. citizen, and of good moral character.
  • Must be willing to qualify, carry, and use assigned weapons.
  • Physical, psychological, and drug‑screening evaluations required.
  • Valid driver’s license (some positions). Must complete the prescribed course at the Tennessee Correction Academy.
Special Qualifications
  • Be willing to and able to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons
  • Be at least eighteen (18) years of age on the date of application
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Have a good moral character, as determined by investigation
  • Complete a criminal history disclosure form in a manner approved by the appointing authority
  • Agree to release all records involving their criminal history to the appointing authority
  • Supply a fingerprint sample prescribed by the TBI for a criminal history check
  • Have no conviction for a felony or have been discharged under any other than honest conditions from any branch of the U.S. armed forces
  • Pass a physical examination administered by a licensed physician that is consistent with the ADA and related to the essential functions of the position
  • Pass a psychological evaluation administered by a licensed mental health professional consistent with the ADA and related to essential functions
  • Submit to and pass a pre‑employment screening test for illegal drug use
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license at the time of appointment in some positions
  • Upon appointment, successfully complete a prescribed course of instruction at the Tennessee Correction Academy
Overview

The Correctional Officer 2 performs correctional work of average difficulty, including custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates on any shift. The class is flexibly staffed and differs from higher classes.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation, work areas, and attend to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs.
  • Inspect and patrol grounds for contraband, unauthorized personnel, and other security risks.
  • Check in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
  • Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families; evaluate on hygiene, attitudes, and report to the counseling department.
  • Attend meetings: staff, disciplinary board, training (riot control, escape prevention, first aid).
  • Prepare reports: daily logs, disciplinary reports, job/pay records, daily inmate counts, requisitions.
  • Operate equipment: radios, firearms, mace, gates, cameras, motor vehicles.
  • Ensure safety of residents through supervision of daily activity.
  • Break up fights or dangerous situations by persuasion or force.
