Position Overview: The Correctional Officer 2 is responsible for correctional work of average difficulty; performs related duties as required. This class oversees custody, transport, and rehabilitation of inmates and may work any shift.
Salary & Sign‑On Bonus: $4,480 per month ($53,760 per year) with a $5,000 sign‑on bonus paid over 18 months.
Background Checks: Motor Vehicle Records screening and a criminal background check are required.
Qualifications- High school graduation or equivalent.
- One year of full‑time adult correctional security work with a federal, state, or accredited agency.
- Full‑time correctional officer employment with the State of Tennessee can substitute the required education on a year‑for‑year basis.
- Must be at least 18 years old and a U-Im-citizen with good moral character.
- Willing to qualify with, carry, and use assigned weapons.
- Pass a physical examination and a psychological evaluation consistent with the ADA.
- Complete a pre‑employment drug test and provide a fingerprint sample for a criminal history check.
- Possess a valid driver’s license for some positions and complete the Tennessee Correction Academy course upon appointment.
- Have no felony convictions or have been discharged under honorable conditions from any branch of the armed forces.
- Supervise inmate activities in housing units, dining areas, recreation and work areas, and attend to medical, visitation, personal property, and recreational needs.
- Inspect and patrol the grounds for contraband and security risks.
- Check in new inmates by assigning accommodations, searching for contraband, issuing clothing, and storing personal property.
- Observe inmate behavior; counsel inmates and families about problems; evaluate hygiene, attitudes, and send reports to the counseling department.
- Attend staff meetings, disciplinary board meetings, and training for riot control, escape prevention, and first aid.
- Prepare reports such as daily logs, disciplinary reports, inmate job/pay records, daily counts, and requisitions for office supplies.
- Operate equipment including radios, firearms, mace, electronic gates, video cameras, and motor vehicles as needed.
- Ensure safety of residents through supervision of daily activities; break up fights or dangerous situations by persuasion or physical force.
