Position Summary
The Senior Manager, Applied Epidemiology, is an enthusiastic and flexible public health professional who manages and implements public health research with internal teams and external partners. The Senior Manager has a strong epidemiological background and is able to manage and design epidemiological and vaccine studies, including vaccine effectiveness and impact evaluations and disease surveillance projects. The position requires exceptional analytical and data management skills, with the ability to analyze complex datasets and translate data into meaningful insights for policy and practice.
The Senior Manager will also develop relationships with partners to implement projects and collaborate across disciplines to strengthen the use of evidence in decision-making.
The successful candidate will play a key role on a dynamic team. Responsibilities will include project management; supporting the development of grant proposals, protocols, and project implementation plans; designing and implementing research protocols; leading and conducting advanced data analyses; contributing to the writing of scientific manuscripts; and communicating results. The Senior Manager will contribute significantly to the management of a cholera project, including a clinical trial of oral cholera vaccine dosing intervals, as well as other responsibilities and projects within the portfolio.
In this role, the Senior Manager ensures Good Clinical Practice and protocol compliance through site monitoring and data quality control activities and is responsible for regular reporting to the funder.
- Project Management:
Provide project oversight, problem-solving, and coordination of study-related activities - Develop and revise study protocols, standard operating procedures, and data collection tools, as needed
- Lead regular calls with project staff, including principal investigators
- Manage communications with funder, data and safety monitoring board, external partners
- Oversee and conduct site monitoring visits to ensure study objectives are met; prepare site monitoring reports, including recommendations
- Develop presentations and data summaries
- Coordinate dissemination of study results in peer-reviewed publications
- Data Monitoring, Management, and Analysis:
Experience with complex data management, including data cleaning, verification, and quality assurance for large, multi-country datasets - Experience with advanced statistical and mathematical modeling approaches, including geographic and spatial analysis and predictive disease modeling methods desired
- Create and maintain data monitoring scripts for study progress and quality
- Oversee the development and maintenance of study databases, with a strong preference for candidates who have experience developing databases themselves, ensuring data integrity
- Design and implement statistical analysis plans
- Conduct advanced statistical analyses; experience with R strongly preferred
- Encourage innovative approaches to data analysis and visualization to communicate results effectively
- Integrate analytical findings into reports and visualizations that inform programmatic and policy decisions
- Policy Translation and Advocacy:
Translate research findings into policy-relevant recommendations and actions - Support evidence-to-policy initiatives and contribute to data-driven advocacy efforts
- Engage with key stakeholders (e.g., WHO, Gavi, ministries of health, and other global health partners) to share insights and inform decision-making
- Contribute to policy briefs, presentations, and other communication materials that highlight evidence-based recommendations
- Grants/Contracts Management:
Contribute significantly to writing grant proposals and concept notes, including literature review and study design components - Lead annual progress and financial reporting on grant outcomes and milestones
- Support management of sub-contracting and partners budgets
- Prepare activity summaries for funder
- Other related duties, as assigned
- Master’s degree in public health, Epidemiology, Statistics, or other health-related field; doctorate preferred
- 9+ years of relevant experience, preferably in the field of epidemiology, public health research, or vaccine studies
- Strong quantitative and analytical skills, including advanced statistical methods and modeling, ideally using R (experience with other analytical tools a plus).
- Demonstrated ability to translate data and research findings into actionable insights for policy and program development
- Proven experience in data management and analysis of large, multi-country datasets; experience with disease surveillance and clinical trials preferred
- Experience working with global health partners and stakeholders (e.g., WHO, Gavi, ministries of health, academic or implementing partners)
- Strong understanding of study design, vaccine trials, and impact/effectiveness evaluations
