Residential Counselor

Responsibilities

Mountain Youth Academy is a 120‑bed residential treatment facility located near Johnson City, TN, Boone, NC, and Abingdon, VA. The Residential Counselor provides direct individual and group treatment and other patient care for young adolescent patients with psychiatric, addictive, and substance abuse disorders. The counselor maintains the therapeutic milieu, collaborates with supervisors, and ensures the safety of patients and staff.

• Completes non‑clinical assignment tasks related to admission, transfer, and discharge processes.
• Assists patients in meeting immediate needs with the ultimate goal of self‑maintenance under supervisor direction.
• Collaborates with team members and participates in multidisciplinary team meetings to report patient progress.
• Documents and reports patient progress and regression.
• Follows procedures, schedules, policies, and practices prescribed by the agency.

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Bachelor’s Degree required with one year of healthcare experience preferred.
• Verbal de‑escalation skills to assist residents in gaining control of behaviors.
• Ability to make quick decisions and respond in a crisis.
• Clear communication and teamwork to solve crises.
• Provides mentoring/shadowing as assigned.
• Functions as a community lead.
