The Sonographer is responsible for using diagnostic medical equipment to diagnose various medical conditions. Sonography, or ultrasonography, is the use of sound waves to generate an image for assessment and diagnosis. The role may specialize in obstetric/gynecologic, abdominal, neurosonography, or breast sonography.

• Reviews patient’s medical history and physician’s instructions
• Prepares equipment for procedure and selects appropriate equipment settings.
• Explains procedure to patient, records any relevant medical history, and directs the patient to positions that provide the best view.
• Applies gel on the skin to aid sound wave transmission.
• Operates equipment to direct nonionizing, high-frequency sound waves into areas of the patient’s body; collects reflected echoes and forms an image that may be videotaped, transmitted, or photographed for interpretation by a physician.
• Views the screen during the scan, looking for visual cues that contrast healthy areas with unhealthy ones; selects images for diagnostic purpose.
• Takes measurements, calculates values, and analyzes the results in preliminary reports for the physicians.
• Keeps patient records and adjusts/maintains equipment.
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
• Complies with safety, infection control and quality improvement policies/procedures.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
