Position: RESIDENTIAL COUNSELOR
Location: Mountain City

RESIDENTIAL COUNSELOR – Mountain Youth Academy

Located in Mountain City, Tennessee, near Johnson City, Boone, and Abingdon, this 120‑bed residential treatment facility assists in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of a wide range of behavioral health issues for young adolescent patients.

Responsibilities

Provide direct individual and group treatment and other aspects of patient care to patients with psychiatric disorders, addictive disease disorders, or related substance abuse or chemical dependency problems. Ensure the safety and well‑being of patients and support the maintenance of a therapeutic milieu. Maintain overall milieu management and safety of patients and staff in the unit, and collaborate effectively with supervisors and management.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Complete non‑clinical assignment tasks related to the admission, transfer, and discharge process.
  • Assist patients with a variety of psychiatric and substance‑abuse diagnoses in meeting immediate needs with the goal of self‑maintenance under the direction of a supervisor.
  • Assist patients in carrying out their established treatment programs by collaborating with other team members and participating in ongoing multidisciplinary team meetings with the supervisor to report patients’ progress.
  • Document and report patient progress/regression.
  • Follow procedures which adhere to daily schedules, policies, and practices prescribed by the agency.
Job Requirements /Special Skills
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree with one year of health care experience required.
  • Verbal de‑escalation skills to assist residents in regaining control of their behaviors.
  • Functions as a community lead.
  • Ability to make quick decisions and respond in a crisis.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with a team and work together to solve a crisis.
  • Provides mentoring/shadowing as assigned.
Compensation & Benefits
  • Hourly pay $18–$23 for non‑degreed; up to an additional $4 per hour for degreed positions.
  • Increase rate for those with prior work experience in medical or behavioral mental healthcare, working with children, and miliary services.
  • Shift differentials $2–$5.
  • Frequent opportunity for overtime.
  • Work–life balance options: full‑time as few as 3 days per week; 8, 12, or 16‑hour shifts; available full‑time weekend shifts at only 36 hours.
