Project Geotechnical Engineer - Louisville, KY

Atlas is a nationwide leader in civil engineering, materials testing and geotechnical consulting services. We are seeking a licensed Professional Engineer to join our Louisville, KY team. The successful candidate will hold a PE license in Kentucky or Indiana.

Position Overview

Job Responsibilities
  • Effectively manage projects, resources, and staff while providing expert technical guidance in geotechnical engineering across diverse projects and ensuring strict adherence to applicable guidelines.
  • Perform geotechnical design, investigation, and analysis for buildings and infrastructure projects, including residential/commercial buildings, bridges, highways, railways, airports, pipelines, and levees/basins.
  • Direct and supervise subsurface explorations, laboratory testing, and data interpretation to ensure high‑quality, timely, and within‑budget delivery of projects.
  • Perform design and analysis for shallow and deep foundations, earthworks recommendations, slope stability and seepage analyses, lateral earth pressure calculations, and other pertinent analyses.
  • Supervise and lead geotechnical support during construction of foundations, grading, utility trenching, and other earthwork operations.
  • Coordinate with clients, stakeholders, and governmental personnel to address all geotechnical concerns comprehensively.
  • Mentor and train junior geotechnical engineers and foster their professional development.
  • Play an active role in professional associations.
Qualifications
  • A bachelor’s degree in civil engineering; a master’s in geotechnical engineering is preferred.
  • 5+ years of experience in geotechnical engineering practice with emphasis on design, analysis, field investigation, and construction supervision.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer in Kentucky or Indiana.
  • Local experience and familiarity with local engineering practice.
Technical Requirements
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills essential for team‑based working.
  • Geotechnical background including principles of soil and rock mechanics, pavement engineering, and groundwater hydrology.
  • Experience in construction oversight for foundation and pavement construction and earthwork observation.
  • Experience with geotechnical engineering software;

  • Familiarity with AASHTO standards, guidelines, and deliverables.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead small to medium‑scale projects and manage field geologists and engineers.
Other Qualities
  • Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Ability to pass a background check for clearance to work on various private and government facilities.
