Position Summary Information
General Summary
The Utility Technician I performs a variety of routine tasks related to the repair and maintenance of the water distribution and wastewater collections systems.
Essential Functions
- Performs a variety of duties directly or indirectly related to repair, maintenance, rehabilitation, or replacement including emergency water main repairs, sewer system maintenance, and all other work related to the water distribution system or wastewater collection system
- Assists in repair, maintenance, replacement or rehabilitation of water mains and wastewater mains, water and wastewater taps, and replacing or repairing defective meters
- Assists in the setup of sediment control devices
- Prepares vehicle pre-trip inspection forms, and various work documents
- Assists in replacing and maintaining fire hydrants, valves, and related fittings, including but not limited to: changing gaskets, leaky caps, and broken stems, operating nuts, etc.
- Makes minor customer notifications concerning required repairs/service
- Assists in investigating and identifying solutions to utility problems, i.e., main, service, meter leak, stoppages, low water pressure, etc.
- Upon certification of class B license, operates and maintains vehicles and equipment such as backhoe, front-end loader, and dump truck
- Assists in operating various kinds of trucks, equipment to complete repairs and maintenance activities
- Assist with the installation of trench shoring devices
- Assists with rodding, cleaning, flushing, and televising sewer mains
- Picks up and disposes of spoil at designated work sites to include cleanup duties at facilities
- Uses two-way radio, mobile data terminals and LAN terminals to update work status
- Operates power and hand tools frequently to accomplish the work (i.e. air jack hammer, air drill, air impact gun)
- Observes safety regulations including wearing personal protective equipment and follows and enforces recommended safety practices and uses appropriate traffic safety devices such as arrow boards, safety lights, cones and barrels, etc. for traffic flow protection in order to ensure the safety of self and others
- Flags traffic as required

- Performs other related duties as assigned
Work Environment And Physical Demands
- Must be capable of lifting heavy objects (up to 90 pounds) on a highly frequent basis and/or assuming awkward positions for long periods of time
- Capable of working in environments with routine exposure to heat, cold, moisture, and air pollution
- Exposure to raw sewage, chemical substances, and minor physical trauma may occur
- Employees are considered essential personnel and must report to work as scheduled under all weather conditions

Minimum Education, Experience Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent
Additional Requirements
- Possession of a valid driver’s license, with no more than 4 points, and the ability to obtain and maintain a WSSC Water driver’s permit within 90 days of hire or transfer date
- Must pass Department of Transportation physical and possess a DOT Medical Card
- Must obtain and maintain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with Tanker endorsement within 1 year of hire or transfer
- Employees in this position are designated or considered emergency personnel; therefore, the employee must report to work as scheduled or as directed by their supervisor when WSSC Water declares an event that requires emergency personnel to report to work
