Job SummaryThe Manager, Nursing Professional Development, is responsible for developing, coordinating and evaluating hospital‑wide education programs for nursing and other professionals. Works within the Association Nursing Professional Development (ANPD) Scope and Standards to develop educational strategies aligned with current practice trends, quality initiatives, and regulatory requirements. Leads education, research, and performance improvement activities to drive improved patient, staff and organizational outcomes. Collaborates with Human Resources and other hospital departments to ensure onboarding, competencies and continuing education are updated to reflect current evidence and trends.

The Role
- Oversee the operational and personnel management of Nursing Professional Development, including establishing goals, monitoring statistics, developing work plans, and supervising on a day‑to‑day basis.
- Provide input with the Education Budget and manage funds to meet budget targets.
- Evaluate and facilitate onboarding, hospital‑wide education programs, continuing education, and BSWH integration initiatives for nursing and other disciplines as designated by the facility.
- Create, foster, and sustain a healthy work environment that supports evidence‑based nursing education, professional development, nursing research, and scholarly activities.
- Assist with the professional development of Generalists and Specialists, succession planning, and recruitment.
- Ensure department activities and records adhere to regulatory requirements; maintain clinical skills and knowledge necessary to support the assigned development team.
- Facilitate staff learning to promote optimal patient/family learning initiatives, including discharge instructions and service‑line learning such as diabetes, oncology, heart failure, etc.
- Collaborate with Nurse Leaders to develop best‑practice staff competency methodology to assure compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate undergraduate and graduate student nurse clinical rotations.
- Participate in review of current research findings and best practices to identify potential improvements in patient care.
- Knowledge and understanding of the ANCC scope and standards of the professional registered nurse and the professional development educator/specialist.
- Knowledge of laws, rules and regulations; standards and guidelines of certifying and accrediting bodies; hospital and department/unit standards, protocols, policies and procedures governing the provision of nursing care applicable to the area of assignment.
- Leadership and management expertise, including behavioral‑based interviewing, team dynamics, and strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Knowledge of quality outcome measures related to assigned areas and strategies to drive improved outcomes through evidence‑based adult learning principles and competency assessment.
- Use of both summative and formative evaluation to determine and communicate effectiveness of programs to create change at individual, service‑line, and department levels.
- Teach, coach and mentor others in program planning and development.
- Ability to make operational decisions around how work gets done – quality and productivity standards, measurable goals for employees and project teams, etc.
- Ability to use broader objectives to determine how best to use resources to meet schedules and goals.
- Ability to make or approve effective hiring and termination decisions.
- Ability to evaluate and recommend changes to policies, and establish procedures that affect the managed organization.
- Basic business knowledge, including annual planning and goal setting, adherence to budgets, employee compensation, compliance and risk management.
- General computer skills, including Microsoft Office, information security, scheduling and payroll systems, electronic medical documentation, and email.
