Summary
An Estimator's primary focus is set on accurately forecasting the cost, size, and duration of a project with expertise in reading, math, and strategic planning. Estimators are considered the “tip of the spear” here at B&D. This role is responsible for developing cost information needed to support informed decisions on project viability and provides market-competitive estimates aligned with organizational goals and objectives.
The responsibility of this position is managing specialized work efficiently, with confidence and competence. The position requires above‑average attention to detail and a strong commitment to completing tasks on time. A somewhat faster‑than‑average pace will be the norm for this position. Detailed and specialized work is the major focus. The position will generally be task‑oriented and requires someone with a conservative, careful, and cautious approach to work.

- Responsible for the management of all plan and specification estimating activities in a way that maximizes the total profitability of the entire company
- Manage the pricing validation process for negotiated work and pricing of change proposals
- Meet the strategic and operational goals in the department through collaboration with leadership
- Develop methods to supply data and information to other departments to maximize effectiveness
- Effective bid leveling by reviewing subcontractor/vendor selection as well as scopes with Area Managers and others, as needed to ensure scope coverage for estimates
- Assist in the negotiation of contracts and change proposals
- Develop and maintain relationships with pre‑construction staff and decision makers of current and prospective customers (owners and general contractors)
- Consulting with Business Development and Estimating on selection of jobs to bid
- Review specifications, scopes, and vendor/subcontractor proposals to ensure accurate scope coverage and bid leveling
- Regularly consult with estimating team and manager during beginning stage of individual assignments to ensure strategy is being followed
- Provide estimates for projects in the conceptual stage for others and as a bid captain
- Develop and implement efficient communication methods to communicate with Business Development and the Area Managers during the bidding phase to ensure timely completion of estimates
- Update changes to material and labor factors used for bidding in estimating software
- Communicate with appropriate management regarding potential unknown variables in an efficient manner
- Responsible for reviewing estimates for potential jobs, and preparing change orders and cost estimates
- Demonstrates excellent communication skills, both oral and written
- Physical demands include long hours sitting, using a computer, standing, pulling/pushing, and walking.
- Job requires advanced computer proficiency and critical thinking abilities, including the ability to multitask and meet hard deadlines
- Other duties, activities, and responsibilities may vary and change as assigned
- Minimum of 5+ years of experience in electrical estimating within the construction industry required
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or other relevant field, or State Journeyman license required
- Relevant work experience may substitute for the required degree or license
- Strong knowledge of electrical systems and applicable codes required
- Proficient in the full Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Outlook, Word, Teams, and Project required
- Intermediate knowledge of building materials and methods utilized in general construction preferred
- Novice understanding of Construction Specification Institute Divisions strongly preferred
