We are seeking a full-time Party Chief Surveyor with 3+ years of professional surveying or construction layout experience to lead our survey/layout efforts in the field. This position is critical to supporting our Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) department and project teams, primarily in the field. You will be responsible for planning and executing survey and layout activities, ensuring accuracy, and mentoring junior field staff.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in surveying principles, construction layout, and the use of total stations, GPS, and related instruments, with experience on commercial construction projects.
You will perform and oversee precise construction layouts, verify measurements, and ensure accuracy and completeness in all field data collection. Additional responsibilities include organizing and producing detailed reports such as 360° photography and thermal imaging, coordinating with VDC and project management to resolve discrepancies, and proactively supporting quality and schedule. This role offers opportunities for growth into advanced VDC, design coordination, and leadership responsibilities.
RESPONSIBILITIESLead and execute field surveying tasks, including construction layout, verification, and as-built documentation using total stations, GPS, and other surveying instruments.
Plan daily field activities, set priorities, and direct supporting crew members or helpers as needed.
Interpret and review drawings, models, and control files, providing recommendations and adjustments based on field conditions.
Establish and maintain project control, benchmarks, and reference points, and verify control provided by others.
Manage and maintain accurate survey data, charts, plots, maps, and records, ensuring data is organized and accessible for VDC and project teams.
Perform calculations and verify the accuracy of field measurements for critical project components, including anchor bolts, sleeves, embeds, and equipment locations.
Conduct quality control checks of layouts and construction prepared by internal teams and other trades, identifying and communicating issues early.
Ensure compliance with safety standards and company policies for personnel, vehicles, and equipment; model safe work practices for the crew.
Operate company vehicles and transport specialty equipment between job sites; coordinate equipment calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
Capture and report 360° jobsite progress photography and thermal imaging data for applicable projects and integrate this information into project documentation.
Collaborate closely with VDC Engineers, project managers, and superintendents to ensure alignment of field layout with design intent and resolve conflicts.
Participate in project coordination meetings as needed to represent the survey/layout function and provide field input.
QUALIFICATIONSHigh School Diploma or equivalent required;
Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), Licensed Land Surveyor (LS), or Registered Professional Land Surveyor (RPLS) certifications preferred.
Surveyor-in-Training (SIT) or Land Surveyor Intern (LSI) for candidates on the licensure track is a plus as well.
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
3+ years of experience in land or construction surveying, with at least 1–2 years in a lead, party chief, or crew chief role (electrical or general construction experience a plus).
Proficiency with surveying instruments (total stations, robotic total stations, GPS systems) and related data-collection software.
Strong understanding of construction drawings, models, and layout processes, including control, offsets, and as-built documentation.
Technologically savvy and eager to learn emerging tools and technologies, particularly those used in VDC workflows.
Valid driver's license and ability to travel between job sites.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying conditions (heat, cold, uneven terrain, active construction sites).
Excellent attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and communication abilities, with the ability to interface professionally with field and office teams.
Preferred experience with AutoCAD, Revit, Trimble, or similar VDC and layout tools (Trimble Access, TBC, etc.).
