Job Description

Our team is seeking an energetic and responsive Lead Instrumentation & Controls (I&C) Engineer for our multidisciplinary Process Infrastructure and Design team. The position is full‑time and can be based in Tempe, AZ;
South Jordan, UT; or Houston, TX, depending on candidate preference. The team handles a variety of global clients and projects in Environmental Infrastructure, Oil & Gas, surface and underground mine infrastructure, industrial facilities, water and wastewater industries, landfills, and contaminated soil sites.

Your Impact
  • Develop I&C design documents such as design drawings, technical specifications, and design basis calculations at a high level of competence and minimal oversight.
  • Demonstrate clear communication and foster leadership within cross‑discipline teams.
  • Work independently and collaborate with other disciplines to meet project goals.
  • Ensure compliance with Codes and Standards, governing regulations, industry practices, and internal procedures.
  • Perform quality reviews for detailed engineering documents and technical specifications.
  • Mentor junior team members in technical excellence and career growth.
  • Review instrument and control system vendor drawings and interface with suppliers, clients, and other engineering disciplines.
  • Participate in the development and design review of Piping & Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs).
  • Prepare and review control deliverables such as Control Narratives, Cause and Effect diagrams, System Architecture Diagrams, Instrument Location Layouts, Installation Details, Wiring & Interconnection Diagrams, PLC Layouts, and Loop Drawings.
  • Prepare instrument datasheets, I/O lists, instrument indexes, instrument selection, and hazardous area classification.
  • Configure and develop programming for control equipment, including PLCs, HMIs, DCS systems, SCADA, etc.
  • Participate in client and project review meetings.
  • Prepare technical bid evaluations and attend Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT).
  • Collaborate with project management and engineering disciplines to develop project budgets, schedules, scope documents, design criteria, and deliverables.
  • Promote engineering professionalism and maintain positive relationships internally and externally.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering (or related field) from an ABET‑accredited program.
  • 7–10 years of relevant experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of Instrumentation Engineering and applicable design standards (API, NFPA, ISA, PIP, IEC, IEEE, ISO, NACE, NESC).
  • Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills.
  • High‑level self‑leadership with attention to detail, multi‑tasking, and prioritization.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal oversight and guide junior team members, with strict QA/QC adherence.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and people‑management skills.
  • Proficiency in SPI (Intools), AutoCAD, and other instrumentation design tools.
  • Strong understanding of control systems (PLC, DCS) and industrial networking protocols.
  • A team‑player attitude and ability to work on multiple projects.
  • Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
  • Effectiveness at coordinating and directing subcontractors safely and efficiently.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and adherence to WSP’s health, safety, drug/alcohol, and harassment policies.
  • Flexibility to work schedules that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
  • Must pass a background check.
Desired Qualifications
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration, or the ability to secure registration within 12 months of hire.
