Job Duties

The Financial Counselor is responsible for reviewing hospital admissions and pre‑admissions to ensure accurate financial and demographic documentation in the computer system. Responsibilities include screening patients for charity, uninsured discount, HPE Medi‑Cal, and ensuring all required forms are completed for every patient and procedure. The counselor provides application support and refers patients to the appropriate department, person, or vendor for follow‑up.

Qualifications
  • Minimum two years’ experience in a hospital admitting or medical business office.
  • Experience with HMO and self‑pay collections.
  • Experience screening patients for state and county assistance programs.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Knowledge of insurance benefits, covered services, billing, and collection procedures for all insurance programs for acute facilities.
  • Essential knowledge of California collection law, insurance billing and reimbursement rules/regulations, COBRA, EMTALA, and federal/state regulations.
  • Computer experience preferred.
  • Prior collection experience preferred.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
