Position OverviewThe Southwest Healthcare MEC Interventional Cardiology Fellowship Program is seeking a highly motivated, clinically strong, and academically driven physician for a one-year ACGME-accredited Interventional Cardiology Fellowship. This program provides comprehensive training in contemporary interventional cardiology with a strong emphasis on procedural excellence, patient-centered care, and scholarly activity.
The fellow will gain advanced experience in diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterization under the supervision of experienced interventional cardiology faculty in a high-volume, community-based institution.
Program OverviewThe Interventional Cardiology Fellowship is an intensive one-year program designed to provide comprehensive training in the evaluation and management of patients with coronary artery disease using catheter-based therapies. Fellows are expected to demonstrate increasing responsibility, autonomy, and professionalism throughout the training year.
Clinical Responsibilities- Participate in a high volume of coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI).
- Develop proficiency in:
- Intravascular imaging: IVUS, OCT.
- Physiologic assessment: FFR, iFR.
- Complex PCI: bifurcations, chronic total occlusions (CTOs), left main interventions.
- Use of atherectomy, embolic protection devices, and mechanical circulatory support (e.g., Impella, IABP).
- Understanding and experience with Structural (TAVR, Watchman, and Mitra-Clip) and Peripheral Procedures (PAD, Carotid, and DVT/PE treatment).
- Perform pre-procedural assessments and obtain informed consent.
- Manage post-procedural care and discharge planning.
- Participate in the STEMI call rotation; respond to all code STEMIs during call periods.
- Participate in scheduled interventional didactic series conferences, including Cath conference, morbidity & mortality, journal club, & structural heart conference
- Instruct general cardiology fellows, residents, and medical students during their Cath lab rotations
- Participate in clinical research, registry participation, or quality improvement projects
- Submit at least one abstract, case report, or manuscript during the fellowship year
- Participate in Cath Lab Quality Assurance (QA) and Quality Improvement (QI)
Initiatives - Attend monthly AQ/AQI meetings and contribute to case reviews
- Assist in pathway and protocol development (e.g., STEMI, antiplatelet therapy, MSC use).
- Maintain professionalism, ethical standards, and compliance with institutional and ACGME requirements
- Complete required procedural logs, evaluations, and milestones
- Adhere to ACC/AHA and SCAI guidelines
- Demonstrate progressive procedural autonomy and sound clinical judgment
- Participate in a rotating STEMI call schedule (every other week) and be 30 mins away from the hospital.
- Must be available to arrive promptly for emergent PCI cases when on call.
Required:
- MD or DO degree
- Completion of an ACGME-accredited Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship
- Board-eligible or board-certified in Cardiovascular Disease
- Eligibility for state medical licensure and hospital credentialing
