What We Are Looking For
Would you like to play a fundamental part in the delivery of Challenger 3, as well as other future programmes? We have an exciting opportunity for a Test Engineer (Instrumentation) to join our busy Trials Engineering team. Full Security Clearance will be required, so candidates must satisfy the 5‑year UK Residency requirement.
The successful candidate will initially work closely with engineering Subject Matter Experts and the Trials Team to undertake trials planning, focusing on defining and documenting instrumentation requirements. Ensuring the selected instruments meet all trials needs through interrogating product datasheets and bench testing equipment.
As the programme matures this will lead into the physical conduct of trials. Instrumentation engineers will install, manage, maintain and interrogate vehicle‑installed and standalone instrumentation. The successful candidate will be expected to gather data for performance and fault finding across a wide range of system development, qualification and reliability trials including EMC, firing, sighting, human factors and mobility. Data monitoring will consist of vehicle data buses such as CAN and Ethernet, as well as discrete sensors for physical measurements (temperature, strain, acceleration).
The role is based from our Telford site. The candidate should expect significant amounts of travel to various locations around the UK and abroad, including civilian and military test sites, as the CR3 programme progresses. The successful candidate must be adaptable, resourceful and possess a confident approach to dynamic problem solving, essential to maintain forward momentum of the trials operating schedule.
Qualifications- Holding valid SC clearance is preferred or must be able to attain SC (i.e., 5 years UK residency).
- A degree in a relevant engineering discipline is desirable; otherwise equivalent engineering and test experience is essential.
- Experience in verification and validation activities, preferably on mobile machinery or within the Military Land Equipment domain. Experience with instrumentation for firing, sighting & mobility trials is desirable.
- Experience with specification, installation and operation of data acquisition equipment and instrumentation across complex systems. Knowledge of 24V systems, safe electrical working practices & fault finding is essential.
- Working knowledge of CAN bus, Ethernet, electrical power and communication technologies/test equipment is desirable.
- Experience utilising various sensors such as accelerometers, strain gauges, temperature sensors, current clamps, etc., is desirable.
- Familiarity with hardware & software such as Dewesoft, IMC, Racelogic VBox is desirable.
- Familiarity with MOD sites and policies including Range Standing Orders is an advantage.
- Strong technical report writing, verbal and IT communication skills.
- Strong work ethic and good team working skills.
- Willingness to travel extensively within the UK and abroad.
- Must hold a Full UK Driver's Licence.
In recognition of the important work of the Trials team, the company will offer a daily £90 net payment as an alternative to overtime and disturbance allowance for any employee, regardless of grade, supporting Trials (i.e., gross value received after tax unlike overtime and disturbance allowance). The payment is on condition of signing a working time opt‑out form and a separate uplift agreement.
