Overview

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a motivated individual to join the Roadway Lighting crew as a Highway Lighting Technician (Electronic Technical Specialist II). This position supports the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of roadway lighting systems on freeways and at signalized intersections. Work in this role is safety-sensitive and hands-on. Employees may work on electrical systems near live traffic, at heights above 40 feet, and in a variety of weather conditions throughout the year.

Crew members also participate in an after-hours on-call rotation, which may require work outside of normal business hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Training and safety protocols are provided.

Responsibilities

  • Locating underground conduit and boxes
  • Diagnosing and investigating power issues
  • Replacing and repairing underground wiring
  • Installing, replacing, and repairing luminaire fixtures
  • Utilize GIS and ATOM to manage asset inventories and streamline maintenance workflows (training provided)
  • Supporting crew operations and maintenance activities as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
  • A minimum of two (2) years of combined education, training, or professional work experience
  • Current licensure as a Master, Journeyman, or Apprentice Electrician in the State of Utah
  • A valid driver's license
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Willingness and ability to participate in an on-call rotation and work after hours as needed
  • Ability to work at heights above 40 feet, with appropriate safety equipment
  • Ability to lift, carry, and handle materials weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation
  • Ability to safely navigate work areas that may include barricades, walls, and uneven terrain
  • Willingness and ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions
  • Ability and willingness to work safely near moving traffic
  • Ability and willingness to safely work on 240/480V single-phase power circuits
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout Utah, which may include overnight stays
Underfill

This position may be filled at the Electronic Technical Specialist I level for applicants with less than two years of experience and without a Master, Journeyman, or Apprentice Electrician license. Applicants must have at least six (6) months of related education, training, or experience to qualify at this level.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to applicants with at least one of the following:

  • Currently holding a Journeyman, or Master Electrician license in the State of Utah
  • Currently holding an Apprentice Electrician license with enrollment as a 3rd or 4th year apprentice in the State of Utah
  • Experience working with electrical and/or roadway lighting systems

Work Location and Conditions
  • This position is currently based at the Traffic Operations Center in Salt Lake City (2060 S 2760 W, UT 84104). The Highway Lighting crew is anticipated to relocate to the UDOT Calvin Rampton Complex in Taylorsville (4501 S 2700 W, UT 84129) around June 2026.
  • This position is required to be on-call and work after hours on a regular basis.
