Position: Barista, Food Services Worker (Part Time)

Overview

Under the direction of the Auxiliary Services Manager, this position works in SLCC's What’s Bruin coffee shop and other SLCC food service areas as assigned. This position creates a positive experience for our customers by providing prompt service, quality beverages, and food products, and maintaining a clean, sanitized, organized, and comfortable coffee shop environment. Acts in accordance with SLCC’s policies and procedures.

Adheres to all Salt Lake County Health Department Food Code regulations. Assist with other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities
  • Daily operations of “What’s Bruin” coffee shop. Acts with integrity, honesty, and knowledge that promote the mission, vision, and values of SLCC. Maintains a calm demeanor during periods of high volume to keep the shop operating to standard. Anticipates customer and shop needs by constantly evaluating the environment and customers for cues. Delivers excellent customer service to all customers by acting with a customer comes first attitude.

    Discovers and responds to customer needs. Maintains a positive, welcoming, and friendly atmosphere. Take customer orders, input them into the POS register, and process payments.
  • Manage orders received on a mobile ordering app on a tablet device. Prepare quality beverages and food products consistently for our customers by adhering to all recipe and presentation standards. Follows all health, safety, and sanitation guidelines. Responsible for minimizing waste by ensuring proper rotation of products and preparing food and beverages correctly. Work to meet or exceed sales goals by suggestive selling.

    Maintain a positive, welcoming, and friendly atmosphere. Form authentic relationships with customers. Make relevant beverage and food recommendations ensuring an engaging experience with the customers that connects them with the right products to meet their needs.
  • Prepare food and beverages to standard recipes or customized for customers, including recipe changes such as temperature, quantity of ingredients, or substituting ingredients. Complete daily food safety, cleanliness, and safety inspections. Maintain a clean, sanitized, and organized workspace and storage room. Daily stocking and rotating of supplies. Maintain inventory levels according to daily business and storage availability. Daily cleaning of the coffee shop, equipment, and storage areas.

    Complete opening and/or closing tasks to ensure efficient operations.
Qualifications
  • Able to lift 30 lbs. repetitively, walk and stand for extended periods of time, push a cart, pull, lift, grab, reach, kneel, squat, bend, stoop, climb and twist. Able to safely complete job duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Maintain regular and consistent attendance and punctuality with or without reasonable accommodation. Able to perform many different tasks during each shift. Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and request clarification when needed.

    Outgoing personality, positive, friendly and enjoy interacting with people. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Ability to build relationships. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills. Provide excellent customer service. POS and cash handling experience. Working knowledge of using computers and tablets. Food service experience. Ability to work both independently and with a team. Possess strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.

    Learn quickly and work well under pressure. Work collaboratively with others in the Auxiliaries team, members of the college community, and our campus vendors. Ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of diverse people, ability, culture, and ethnic backgrounds, to maintain good working relationships across the College. Ability to work with all groups in a diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of community college students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities.

    6 months of coffee shop or other food service experience.
  • Current Utah Food Handler Permit or able to obtain within the first 14 days of employment.
  • Available to work at least 4 shifts Monday - Friday 7:00 am - 2:30 pm. One year of coffee shop/barista or food service experience.
