Multi‑Language Learners (MLLs), sometimes referred to as English as a Second Language (ESL) students, face a unique set of challenges deeply rooted in systemic inequities in the classroom. Addressing these challenges and providing support for these K-5 students, recognizing and valuing the linguistic and cultural assets these students bring.
At South Kearns Elementary, we would love to support MLL in progressing their English skills rapidly and empathetically, to try and reduce and ultimately remove the barriers to their academic progress and overall learning.
ResponsibilitiesThis position will work with our multilingual students to learn vocabulary, letters, and sounds. Students needing support will be identified by teachers. As the tutor, you will organize small groups of students to work with during the day on English. Lessons and supplies will be prepared for the tutor. Meet with small groups of K‑5th‑grade students and tutor them in rudimentary English skills.
Knowledge,Skills & Abilities
- Desire to work with elementary age students from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Serve as a positive role model and mentor.
- Must have an SLCC Federal work‑study award through SLCC's Financial Aid office.
- Must be able to earn a Work Study award.
- Must be enrolled in 6 credit hours per semester.
- Must work at least 10 hours and no more than 20 hours a week during the semester.
- Must be comfortable talking with students, staff, and faculty.
- Must have basic computer skills.
- Program Associates may create their own work schedules within available hours at their school sites.
- Must commit to attending an orientation and team meetings at the outset.
- Must be able to leave campus and access the partner site using their preferred transportation method.
- Basic understanding of the English language and usage.
- Spanish speaking a plus, but not needed.
- Experience teaching, tutoring, and/or mentoring.
- Experience working with 3‑6‑year‑old children.
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds and lead groups of diverse representation in effective learning.
