Position: Advanced Practice Provider (O-5 Billet) Supervisory

Overview

The Supervisory Advanced Practice Provider oversees Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners at the DHS IHSC facility, training, and scheduling. Provides direct detainee care, performs evaluations, and prescribes medications. Requires licensure, certification, and 6+ years clinical experience. The Supervisory APP reports directly to the facility Clinical Director. This position is only open to current USPHS officers. USPHS Call to Active Duty (CAD) candidates are not eligible for this position.

Major Duties
  • Serve as direct supervisor and rater to federal Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), including Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners, at IHSC sites.
  • Provide leadership and oversight of APP onboarding and training.
  • Participate in national APP training initiatives as required.
  • Assist in credentialing and privileging processes; oversee APP peer review processes.
  • Augment clinical leadership in collaboration with the Clinical Director.
  • Coordinate APP work schedules at IHSC sites and coordinate regular on-site APP meetings and in-service training.
  • Serve as Acting Regional APP or Acting Chief APP as required.
  • Provide direct detainee care via scheduled appointments, emergency or urgent care visits.
  • Work within IHSC Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Collaborative Practice and Prescriptive Authority Agreement (CP/PAA).
  • Consult with physician/Clinical Director for complex medical and/or psychiatric patients as required by IHSC policy.
  • Provide infirmary care including admission, discharge, and daily rounds for detainees needing higher levels of medical care or monitoring.
  • Perform comprehensive history and physical evaluations, behavioral health care, and minor outpatient surgical procedures as required by IHSC policy.
  • Prescribe medications with knowledge of pharmacology and therapeutics.
  • Coordinate detainee health care needs including referrals to off-site consultants; interpret diagnostic and laboratory results.
  • Interpret Tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) and diagnostic studies; manage Direct Observation Therapy (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). TB.
  • Apply infection control actions per IHSC policy; adhere to universal precautions and safe sharps disposal.
  • May serve as medical escort for detainees during domestic/overseas travel.
  • Utilize interpretation/translation services as needed to communicate with LEP patients or those with communication disabilities.
  • Provide patient health education to detainees verbally and/or via handouts.
  • Document detainee care visits accurately in required health records per IHSC policy.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and confidentiality of medical records.
  • Maintain basic readiness for duty and active CPR/BLS certification.
  • Maintain clinical skills through continuing education; complete training as required; adapt to schedule changes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Qualifications

Physician Assistant – Requires unrestricted PA state license, NCCPA certification, ARC-PA-accredited PA program graduate, PA-C certification. >
More than six years of full-time clinical experience as a PA; supervisory experience; DEA registration to prescribe controlled substances.

Nurse Practitioner – Requires unrestricted NP license (FNP or AGNP), national board certification (AANP or ANCC), current/state licensure, graduate-level NP degree from an accredited program. Knowledge of Nurse Practice Act; more than six years of clinical experience; supervisory experience; DEA registration.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – IHSC health system experience, correctional healthcare experience, CCHP certification, IHSC policies/NCCHC/PBNDS familiarity, infection control and TB management knowledge, ACLS, ATLS certifications.
