Position Summary
Incumbents of positions in this series prepare or review plans, designs, specifications and cost estimates for engineering projects; prepare and/or review reports, studies, and analytical data; perform calculations related to engineering problems; conduct engineering surveys; inspect construction and/or maintenance work; and perform related duties as required.
The basic purpose of this work is to perform professional engineering duties in such areas as highways, bridges, buildings and facilities, all in accordance with sound engineering principles, applicable laws, regulations, and standards.

- Review consultant designs and contract documents for projects developed for advertisement through MassDOT's Road and Bridge Program.
- Provide engineering data for the preparation and review of engineering or environmental reports and studies.
- Perform general calculations related to bridge design, survey traverses, traffic forecasting, soil capacity, groundwater flow, and quantity of materials.
- Review ancillary structure inspection reports.
- Act as an Assistant to the Resident Engineer to inspect roadways, intersections, and bridge improvement projects to ensure that work is being performed according to specifications.
- Enter temporary traffic control notifications for ancillary structures in the MassDOT traffic control system.
- Track deficiencies in accordance with the Highway Division's Standard Operating Procedures using MassDOT's Work Order Management System (i.e., Vue Works).
- Collect data from construction, maintenance, and repair projects to inventory and inspect new or repaired ancillary structures.
- Test materials used in the production of bituminous concrete pavements and cement concrete to ensure compliance with relevant standards.
- Perform site inspections of construction operations on active bridges, roadways, and maintenance‑related work.
- Write memoranda, letters, and reports to supervisors concerning the status of engineering projects or problems.
- Promote a harmonious work environment, respect the opinions of others, and work in a diverse team.
- Perform other related duties as required by the District Ancillary Structures Engineer on an as‑needed basis.
- Proficiency in various civil engineering software (AutoCAD, GIS, Excel, etc.).
- Ability to work/interact in a diverse workforce.
- Excellent grasp of engineering fundamentals.
This position is eligible for a five‑thousand dollar ($5,000) signing bonus (“Signing Bonus”) if you are newly hired rent MassDOT employees are not eligible for the Signing Bonus. The Signing Bonus will be paid in two parts:
1) $3,000 (less applicable taxes) included in the employee's first paycheck.
2) $2,000 (less applicable taxes) after the successful completion of the employee’s probationary period.
This requisition will remain open until filled; however, first consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.
Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full‑time, or equivalent part‑time, technical or professional experience in civil engineering work in such areas as construction, survey, design, transportation, hydraulics, structural, sanitary, drafting, environmental, highway, architectural, airport, soils and materials or (B) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
- Associate’s degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required experience.
- Bachelor’s or higher degree with a major in civil engineering or civil engineering technology may be substituted for the required experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:
Based on assignment, possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator’s License may be required.
