The purpose of this position is to enforce building codes and regulations. Inspect electric, building, plumbing, HVAC, and gas installations in Tarpon Springs buildings to ensure compliance with the Florida Building Code, working with contractors and homeowners to uphold safety and quality standards.

This job works under general supervision, independently developing work methods and sequences.

Examples of Duties
  • Conduct inspections to ensure all installations comply with the Florida Building Code, and safety and quality standards are met in electric, plumbing, HVAC, and gas systems for new and existing buildings.
  • Sorts, organizes, and processes inspection requests; schedules time frames for inspections, contacts contractors and owners, and facilitates completion of the inspection.
  • Travels to various inspections to review, evaluate, and assess work for compliance with building construction standards; ensures conformity with approved plans, and permits.
  • Identifies and determines non-compliant work; notes discrepancies to ensure that all violations are identified, addressed, and resolved in a timely and professional manner.
  • Provides education, assistance, and direction for property owners and agencies; delivers technical expertise and impartiality when dealing with contractors, engineers, architects, designers, plan reviewers, and other inspectors.
  • Advices and confers with building contractors, engineers, architects, owners, and others regarding building construction and ordinances; communicates effectively and professionally providing advice and direction regarding building and related concerns.
  • Ensures the completion of detailed, professional, and accurate inspection reports; develops, updates, and maintains various documents and reports monitoring the construction projects within the city; ensures daily work is completed.
  • Conduct damage assessments.
  • Performs related work as assigned.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Any combination of education and work experience that meets Chapter 468, Florida Statutes, to obtain and maintain a Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) inspection license; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.

Special Certifications and Licenses
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.
  • Inspector I- A standard Inspector license issued by the state of Florida DBPR or ability to obtain provisional license within 3 months of hire and obtain standard license within 12 months.
  • Inspector II
    - Possession of 2 standard licenses issued by state of Florida DBPR for Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing; OR- standard Residential Inspector license.
  • Inspector III
    - Possession of 3 standard licenses issued by state of Florida DBPR for Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing; OR
    -1 standard license and Residential inspector license.
  • Inspector IV
    - Possession of 4 standard licenses issued by the state of Florida for Building, Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing; OR- 2 standard licenses and Residential inspector license.

Group B
Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.
Performs light to medium work that involves walking or standing virtually all the time and also involves exerting between 20 and 50 pounds of force on a regular and recurring basis or skill, adeptness and speed in the use of the fingers, hands or limbs on repetitive operation of mechanical or electronic office or shop machines or tools within moderate tolerances or limits of accuracy.
