Educational Needs Coordinator

The post requires a dedicated and compassionate practitioner with a strong commitment to inclusive education. We welcome applications from both experienced SENCOs and teachers who are new to the role but bring enthusiasm, excellent classroom practice, and a determination to champion the needs of all learners.

The successful applicant will have a clear vision for high‑quality provision for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities, and the skills to work effectively with the Headteacher, Leadership Team, staff, parents, external agencies, and Governors to strengthen our inclusive ethos.

This role offers the opportunity to join a successful and well‑respected school that has all the essential ingredients to ensure children with additional needs are supported to thrive and succeed. This is a non‑class‑based role. Specific areas of responsibility will be shaped around the strengths and experience of the successful candidate.

The school has a well‑established induction programme, and support is provided for newly appointed staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish positive, supportive relationships with children, staff and families, championing the needs of pupils with SEND.
  • Have high expectations for the progress and potential of all pupils with SEND, including those with complex or additional needs.
  • Lead, coordinate and monitor provision for pupils with SEND, ensuring all statutory requirements are met.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policies and practices that promote inclusion and remove barriers to learning.
  • Communicate effectively with pupils, colleagues, parents/carers and external professionals, working in close partnership to secure the best outcomes.
  • Be committed to improving practice through professional development, reflection and ongoing training (including completing the National Award for SEN Coordination if required).
  • Ensure timely identification of additional needs and lead the graduated response, including effective use of assessment and provision mapping.
  • Support staff in planning high‑quality, personalised provision for learners with SEND across the full age and ability range.
  • Promote strategies that support literacy, numeracy, communication, SEMH needs and wider learning skills for pupils with SEND. Monitor and track the progress of pupils with SEND, providing clear analysis and feedback to teachers, leaders and families.
  • Model, promote and support high‑quality teaching and adaptive practice for pupils with varying needs.
  • Coordinate and contribute to EHCP processes, multi‑agency meetings and review cycles.
  • Establish a purposeful, safe and inclusive learning environment in which children feel respected, valued and confident.
  • Promote positive behaviour and emotional wellbeing, using supportive, consistent strategies to meet individual needs.
  • Work with colleagues to ensure that teaching assistants and other adults are effectively deployed to support learning.
  • Lead or contribute to staff training, sharing good practice and strengthening whole‑school understanding of SEND.
  • Use assessment, attendance and pastoral information to support early intervention and targeted support for vulnerable pupils.
  • Ensure accurate and up‑to‑date record‑keeping in line with statutory expectations.
Requirements
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
  • Evidence of recent professional development and a willingness to engage in ongoing SEND‑related training.
  • A proven record as an excellent, reflective classroom practitioner who adapts teaching to meet a wide range of needs.
