Responsibilities- Case Management, Referrals, Recommendations and Assessment: initiate contact with the youth, family, victims, and law enforcement when referrals are received by the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (FDJJ).
- Conduct home and school visits as part of the information collection and family involvement model; initiate contact with the victim to obtain the victim’s opinion regarding case handling and disposition.
- Use Motivational Interviewing to engage the youth and family to determine social, developmental, emotional, financial, and other needs.
- Obtain and review collateral information from other agencies involved with the youth and family (e.g., abuse history, education, mental health, substance use, gang activity).
- Conduct and document FDJJ screening(s) and assessments to identify risk/needs, protective factors, and the need for further evaluations (including detention and intake screening, Suicide Risk Screening Instrument, and other approved instruments).
- Facilitate comprehensive assessments and refer youth and family to needed services regardless of youth’s legal status when results indicate needed services (e.g., diversion and civil citation).
- Document all referrals for services and follow up actions; formulate case management strategies to address youth and family needs.
- Make service referrals to appropriate providers and oversee follow-up actions; provide supervision and treatment recommendations to the State Attorney and other judicial partners to ensure appropriate services in the least intrusive manner.
- Discuss safety planning with youth and family to avert risk and victimization; complete screening instruments and reports used by the Department and/or courts.
- Maintain records and prepare case-related documents and reports as required by FDJJ and the courts; provide technical assistance and conduct case reviews with staff to determine intervention strategies.
- Prepare and maintain court-related documents, present information at hearings as appropriate, and ensure communication of court outcomes to all affected parties.
- Conduct risk and needs assessments using Department-approved tools; develop and adjust case plans in collaboration with youth and family; coordinate services and follow up with providers as needed.
- Engage in community collaboration, maintain contact with schools, law enforcement, care providers, and other agencies to address community concerns and promote safe communities.
- Participate in transition and exit planning for youth leaving residential programs and coordinate post-residential services in mental health, substance abuse, education, and workforce areas.
- Education and Records Management: assist youth and family with accessing community resources, review collateral reports, confer with relevant professionals, provide crisis intervention, and ensure proper documentation in JJIS.
- Communicate with service providers to ensure assessments and progress reports are received regularly; maintain organized case files (digital and hard copy) in JJIS.
- Documents and reports: provide technical assistance, conduct case reviews, and act as liaison to the Circuit Data Integrity Officer on JJIS issues.
- Special Assignments and Training: participate in professional development, supervision case audits, committees, and outreach to external groups as directed; train interns/volunteers as assigned.
