Position Concept

Mechanic Garage I, II, & III (GM I, II, & III) is a multi‑level classification progression responsible for performing all phases of repair, service and/or fabrication on Tampa Electric Company’s fleet and equipment. The complexity of tasks varies based on the prescribed classification level. The scope of this position includes responsibilities defined in Exhibit “A” of the IBEW Collective Bargaining Agreement and/or the IBEW Intent Book for positions at a lesser rate of pay.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairs on Tampa Electric Company’s light vehicles, heavy‑duty trucks, and heavy‑equipment fleet including gasoline engines, diesel engines, drivetrain, brakes, suspension & steering, electrical/electronic systems.
  • Perform automotive troubleshooting and repairs in engine repair, automatic transmission & transaxle, manual drivetrain and axles, suspension & steering, brakes, electrical/electronic systems, heating & air conditioning, and engine performance.
  • Perform vehicle and non‑vehicle welding and/or fabrication.
  • Perform all phases of troubleshooting and repairs to mobile hydraulic equipment and/or systems (aerial lifts, digger derricks, cranes, etc.).
  • Perform all phases of troubleshooting and repairs to construction equipment (bulldozers, front‑end loaders, etc.).
  • Perform preventative maintenance routines on vehicular and non‑vehicular equipment.
  • Complete all work in line with job‑related safe work practices, work rules, and regulatory/environmental requirements.

Relationships
  • Internal: Energy Delivery key customer contacts, including all operating personnel.
  • External: May interact with equipment manufacturers, suppliers, and other vendors.
Qualifications
  • Education/Training –

    Required:

    High School diploma or equivalent. Commercial Driver License Class A (general knowledge, air brakes, combination vehicle) with H endorsement. Certain Tampa Electric specific and national certifications are required. Refer to the IBEW Intent Book.
  • Related Experience –

    Required:

Work Conditions

This position requires irregular work schedules including night‑shift assignments, temporary assignments to various fleet locations, overtime, and the ability to respond to call‑outs/road calls (Garage Mechanic III only). Occasional work on weekends and use of personal tools and vehicles for business related transportation are also required. The working environment is typical of heavy truck and equipment repair facilities with occasional outdoor lighting challenges, tight working conditions, and frequent vehicle movement.

Storm Duty Requirements

Responding to storms will be considered a condition of employment. Team members are required to participate in the response/recovery activities related to emergencies/disasters to maintain service to TECO Energy customers.
