Veterinary Technician – Surgery Team
Blue Pearl Pet Hospital, located in Pittsburgh North, is hiring an exceptional Veterinary Technician for the Surgery Team.
Compensation & BenefitsPay: $21.10 – $40.60 / hour (dependent on experience and Career Trax leveling).
Sign‑on bonus: up to $5,000 based on experience and applicable licensure (eligible credentials: LVT, CVT, RVT, LVMT, VTS). Additional shift differential pay available for nights and weekends.
Shift Differentials- Mon – Fri, 6 pm to 8 am: $3.00
- Sat & Sun, 6 pm to 8 am: $4.50
- Sat & Sun, 8 am to 6 pm: $3.00
Outpatient Technician:
- Admit patients for surgical procedures, place IV catheters.
- Facilitate new consult appointments and recheck exams.
- Obtain patient history from clients.
- Restrain animals for exam and diagnostics.
- Perform blood draws, obtain radiographs, take vitals.
- Assist with bandage changes.
Recovery:
- Monitor post‑operative vitals, pain score, mentation, temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, pulse oximetry.
- Operate and troubleshoot fluid pumps; connect/disconnect patients.
- Discharge post‑op patients from the hospital.
- Review side effects, activity restrictions, and physical therapy exercises with owners.
- Prepare medications and, if needed, call outside pharmacies.
- Answer client calls, serve as liaison between doctor and pet owner, ensure documentation in the medical record.
- Monitor sedated patients for minor procedures or advanced diagnostics.
Anesthesia Technician: For qualified candidates once outpatient responsibilities mastered or at a higher level.
- Perform calculations for induction drugs, continuous rate infusions, and emergency drugs.
- Intubate and extubate animals safely.
- Operate and monitor patients on an anesthetic ventilator.
- Place arterial catheters and assist with epidurals, local blocks, and other techniques.
- Monitor anesthesia during routine, orthopedic, and emergency procedures; recognize normal vs. abnormal vitals and communicate with the doctor.
- Perform daily safety maintenance on anesthesia machines and systems.
- Aseptically prep and prepare patients for soft‑tissue and orthopedic procedures.
- Assist and perform induction procedures.
- Recognize arrhythmias on ECG and communicate with the doctor.
- Complete CPR training modules; apply to real‑life situations.
- Maintain surgical readiness by preparing and wrapping surgical packs and performing sterilization (autoclave and gas systems).
Structured anesthesia training is offered with a dedicated mentor. Full training opens on‑call responsibilities.
