Our Organization and Mission: The Office represents the State of Florida in all criminal appeals filed with the District Court of Appeal and the Florida Supreme Court.

The Work You Will DoThe primary duty of the position is CRIMINAL APPEALS:
Represent the State of Florida in all criminal appeals filed with the District Court of Appeal and the Florida Supreme Court.
Roles and responsibilities include:
- DIRECT AND POSTCONVICTION APPEALS:
Supervise the timely filing of necessary pleadings and documents comprising the record on appeal; review the assignments of error; conduct research necessary to prepare and file briefs setting forth contentions and positions of the State of Florida with respect to the issues involved; oral argument and all other responsibilities attending the prosecution of a criminal appeal. - FEDERAL HABEAS CORPUS PROCEEDINGS:
Represent the appropriate state official in habeas corpus proceedings filed by state prisoners in the federal courts in the District Courts for Florida. - Respond to the claims of prisoners asserting federal constitutional rights violations; review the state court proceedings resulting in the conviction questioned; supervise and prepare necessary pleadings and responses; handle hearings and post-trial proceedings.
- Handle appeals from the foregoing proceedings to the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and to the United States Supreme Court.
- EXTRAORDINARY WRITS:
Handle extraordinary litigation in both state and federal courts where appropriate; perform other special assignments or duties as directed (civil litigation, special projects, postconviction litigation and opinions).
- Admission to the Florida Bar and two years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law or in administrative or judicial hearings. The required legal experience must be from the practice of law in a state or territory of the United States. Membership in good standing in another state Bar can substitute for the required admission to the Florida Bar provided that, pursuant to Rule 11-1.10 of the Rules Regulating the Florida Bar, the attorney applies for and obtains admission to the Florida Bar within 12 months of appointment to a position in this class.
- Preference may be given to applicants with criminal or appellate experience.
