Overview
The SPT I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background. The role involves handling specimens and performing tasks that support laboratory testing. The position is in a production environment and requires compliance with safety and quality standards, as well as flexibility due to daily changes in requirements.
Responsibilities
- Perform functions in the Specimen Processing Department, including A-station, presort, and pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory.
- Handle imaging/microfilming, centrifugation and aliquoting as part of specimen processing.
- Enter data accurately and in a timely manner; expected to manage up to 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour.
- Adapt to changing test orders and compliance regulations that may change daily.
- Maintain organization, safety, and cleanliness of the work area; demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and effective communication with all levels of staff.
- Support night shift work; based on staffing needs, weekends, holidays, on-call duties and overtime may be required.
- Operate in a biohazard environment with adherence to safety, core values, and compliance policies.
Qualifications
- Education:
High School diploma or equivalent (required). - Knowledge:
Basic understanding of computers; preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing. - Experience:
No experience required; prior laboratory experience is preferred. Medical background and terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory are pluses. Prior hospital laboratory experience is a plus but not required. Experience in a production environment is preferred.
