Specimen Processing - Specimen Technician - 3rd Shift

Overview

The SPT I is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background.

• Perform A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation and aliquoting.
• Ensure all functions are performed with confidence, accuracy and in a timely manner.
• Learn and understand specimen types related to tests ordered by clients.
• Learn and understand the compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change daily.
• Adapt to changes and demonstrate flexibility due to day-to-day variations.
• Work primarily on the night shift with staffing needs including weekends, holidays, on call and overtime availability.

• Department is a production environment with emphasis on productivity and quality standards and departmental completion times.
• Position requires data background with ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes/hour.
• Works in a biohazard environment, practicing good safety habits.

HS diploma or equivalent.

Basic understanding of computers with a preferred knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing.

No experience required but previous laboratory experience preferred. Medical background preferred which includes medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory. Previous hospital laboratory experience is a plus but not required. Previous experience in a production environment preferred.
