Salary $37.15 - $55.71/hour; $6,439.33 - $9,656.40/month; $77,272.00 - $/year

This is highly responsible work involving the advancement of the city’s sustainability and resilience efforts.

Nature Of Work

The employee supports the Sustainability & Resiliency Officer in tracking progress and implementation of the Resilient Tampa roadmap, Climate Action & Equity Plan, and Heat Resilience Playbook. The work falls into two primary categories:
1) conducting research to inform environmental, sustainability, and resilience policy set by the city, and
2) serving as Project Coordinator for several ongoing initiatives developed by the Sustainability & Resiliency Officer. Working under general supervision, employee is required to exercise reasonable independent judgment and initiative in coordinating activities and responding to the public. Tasks are of more than average difficulty and require significant tact, diplomacy and discretion in all internal and external interactions. Work is reviewed through observation, conferences, training evaluations, reports submitted, and results obtained.

Examples

of Duties

Conduct research and analysis on climate and energy best practices, and communicate that research effectively in memos, staff reports and public presentations.

Coordinate activities to maintain partnerships with community organizations, participate in community events, addressing various issues (i.e. energy efficiency, recycling, stormwater, alternative transportation, renewable clean energy).

Generate interest and support for energy reduction and overall environmental sustainability through presentations and community interactions.

Assist in developing environmental education programs and activities: design and implement awareness campaigns and other environmental education programs; coordinate with other City departments and staff; provide updates; and resolve concerns.

Manage and create website content, press releases, blog posts, any social media responsibility, and newsletters.

Perform public relations tasks; represent the department and attend various meetings and events; provide information, answer questions, and make presentations regarding sustainability programs, goals, issues, and concerns.

Work with Energy Efficiency and Carbon Manager to manage and track energy efficiency and low carbon programs.

Perform related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Working knowledge of: business English, spelling, grammar, and arithmetic; methods and techniques related to tree planting and green stormwater infrastructure; practices and methods of volunteer engagement.

Ability to: establish and maintain effective working relationships with city officials, department representatives, members of community groups, and the general public; write and speak clearly and concisely in a variety of communication settings; be flexible in dealing with diverse audiences; observe and record information and incidents; evaluate information, draw sound conclusions, and prepare and submit oral and written reports; maintain files and databases.

Skill in: project and grant management; building and maintaining relationships with internal and external stakeholders; public speaking; planning, marketing and coordinating volunteer events; computers, MS Office and various digital technologies; operation of various parks and facilities maintenance tools; geographic information systems (GIS).

Physical Requirements

Mostly sedentary, indoors, requires extended use of computer, typing and viewing monitor.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in environmental science, public policy or administration, geography, engineering, urban planning, sustainability, resilience, or related field and 1 year of related work experience in sustainability, resilience, energy, or public policy;
OR

An equivalent combination of education (not less than possession of a high school diploma/GED), training and experience that would reasonably be expected to provide the job-related competencies noted above.

Licenses or Certifications

Possession of a valid driver's license required.
