Job Summary
WSP is currently initiating a search for an On-Call Lead Environmental Engineer for our White Springs, FL location (also considering Jacksonville, Gainesville, and Tampa, FL). The senior environmental engineer will provide technical support and direction for grassing establishment and maintenance for mine closure projects, manage the gopher tortoise relocation program, and support wildlife management initiatives. Hands‑on expertise in natural resource management, permitting, compliance, and listed species coordination is required.
Responsibilities- Lead and direct grassing and land reclamation projects, ensuring successful establishment, ongoing maintenance, and compliance with regulatory success criteria.
- Manage the gopher tortoise relocation program, including field surveys, permitting, long‑term site maintenance, and regulatory compliance.
- Support wildlife management initiatives such as threatened and endangered species surveys, habitat restoration, and biodiversity enhancement.
- Conduct environmental investigations and inspections of air, water, and hazardous waste facilities to determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
- Perform environmental site assessments and develop action plans for pollution, corrosion, hazardous waste, and environmental control projects.
- Interact with subcontractors, clients, and multidisciplinary teams in a confident and professional manner.
- Adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and exercise responsible decision‑making regarding company resources.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a closely related discipline.
- 7+ years of post‑education experience in environmental engineering, natural resource management, and compliance monitoring.
- Demonstrated success in land reclamation projects for mining and industrial operations.
- Experience with gopher tortoise surveys, relocation, and long‑term recipient site management.
- Strong technical knowledge of NPDES stormwater and wastewater programs.
- Expertise in constructed wetlands, pollinator habitat restoration, and lake restoration.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and project management skills.
- Engineer license required.
- Proficiency in applying engineering principles to environmental and project work.
- Self‑leadership, detail orientation, multi‑tasking, and prioritization in dynamic work environments.
- Commitment to safety, health, and harassment policies.
- Ability to meet travel and schedule demands.
- Master’s degree in Environmental Engineering or a closely related field.
- Familiarity with Florida regulatory environments.
- History of successful permitting for major mining and reclamation projects.
