ITS Traffic Engineer at VHB
Join us as an ITS Traffic Engineer to help plan, document, design and support advanced ITS infrastructure and traffic design across the Southeast. Hybrid work is available in Orlando or Tampa, FL.
Responsibilities- Lead development of ITS/ATMS and traffic signal design plans
- Perform traffic engineering and task management for a wide variety of ITS/ATMS projects
- Prepare technical specifications and construction cost estimates
- Develop electrical one‑line diagrams and conduct electrical system calculations, including voltage drop, arc flash, and short circuit analyses
- Prepare Power Design Analysis Reports for ITS infrastructure
- Create communication diagrams and fiber/copper splicing plans
- Develop key systems engineering documentation, including:
- Concept of Operations (Con Ops)
- Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMP)
- Requirements Traceability Verification Matrix (RTVM)
- Conduct field work such as data collection and site investigations
- Coordinate with clients, project stakeholders, and multidisciplinary teams
- Support business development and marketing efforts
- Manage and mentor junior staff in successful delivery of project tasks
- 8+ years’ experience in ITS design and/or system development, including traffic signal plans, communication plans, and network planning/architecture
- Proficiency with data analysis tools such as Excel
- Familiarity with design platforms including Open Roads Designer (ORD), Micro Station, and AutoCAD
- Excellent communication skills—written, verbal, and interpersonal
- Collaborative team player who can also work independently
- Self‑driven with a strong work ethic and passion for continuous learning
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deliver high‑quality work on time
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Systems, or Electrical Engineering required; focus on Transportation preferred
- Master’s degree may substitute for 2 years of professional experience
- 8–11+ years of ITS engineering experience required
- Familiarity with state DOT processes and standards preferred
- Professional Engineer (P.E.) License required
