Lead Structural Engineer (Buildings) — WSP in the U.S.
WSP is seeking a Lead Structural Engineer to join their dynamic Property & Buildings team in Tampa, FL
. Our team provides structural design consulting for complex building projects across science/technology, healthcare, commercial construction, public safety, K-12, and higher education. This role provides high level technical assistance and guidance for multi-site/phase due diligence, investigation, remediation, improvement, and/or construction of building projects in the public and private sector. Responsibilities include research, design, concept development, planning, and construction of load-bearing structures or structural elements.
The position requires delivering high-quality work that meets or exceeds industry standards for design, safety, structural soundness, and functionality, and ensuring deliverables are produced and distributed on time in compliance with project-specific construction codes. This role demonstrates leadership and a commitment to growing within the structural engineering profession and mentors other engineers in a team environment.
Your Impact
- Apply high-level structural engineering techniques to identify improvements across project phases including concept development, preliminary design, final design, procurement, construction, and operation.
- Perform professional structural engineering work, conduct research and inspections of site conditions, and determine conformance with applicable rules, standards, and permits.
- Develop construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and updated layout plans in coordination with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
- Engage from project inception to completion in design management, rehabilitation, and remediation of building projects.
- Incorporate advanced technologies, materials, modeling techniques, and design requirements to ensure safety and functionality, with future-ready solutions aligned to structural design standards.
- Coordinate design efforts with engineers, architects, planners, and other professionals to execute project work on multiple concurrent projects, including budgets, hours, expenses, costs, quantities, calculations, permit support, and construction.
- Review and approve building design plans to ensure compliance with codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Prepare data visualizations, reports, sketches, calculations, cross-sections, and 2D/3D illustrations for interpretation and presentation of analyses.
- Prepare comprehensive structural technical reports and presentations explaining research, concepts, and recommendations.
- Analyze site investigation data and contribute to action plans for moderate- to high-level risk mitigation.
- Interact with architects, consultants, and clients in a confident and professional manner.
- Collaborate with engineers and building design professionals on Federal, State, regional, local, and private projects, as well as proposals and business development opportunities.
- Remain current in the latest structural engineering techniques and practices.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and conduct, adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Structural or Civil Engineering, or closely related discipline.
- 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience in structural design.
- Professional Engineer license required.
- Structural Engineer (SE) license required, or the ability to demonstrate that licensure can be achieved quickly.
- Proficiency with structural engineering principles, practices, and design/build processes.
- Experience with building structural planning, design, construction management, and rehabilitation/new design projects.
- Working knowledge of sustainability concepts and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
- Knowledge of relevant structural construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record-keeping requirements.
