This position is responsible for the engineering and design of Tampa Electric Company’s distribution system, focusing on new construction and capital projects. The Engineer designs and manages projects using TEC tools and creates permits and construction drawings. Successful coordination with TEC departments and stakeholders is required for project completion.
Position Duties and Responsibilities- Meet with customers and agents to assess needs and determine feasibility for multiple construction projects and load additions; manage schedule and required completion dates of design phases.
- Maintain communication with all involved entities regarding updates or changes that may impact the design schedule, documenting updates through letters and emails.
- Coordinate design activities between TEC Planning & Scheduling, Field Construction, Operations, customers, and other ED Departments.
- Oversee contracted design work and internal processes as needed.
- Create and manage work requests (WR) in the Work Management System (WMS).
- Analyze solutions for customers and the TEC distribution system, including load sizing, facility location design, and adherence to NESC, TEC specifications, Florida Administrative Code, and other applicable standards.
- Use TEC’s GIS to design and update electrical features, ensuring correct connectivity, supporting structures, and integration with WMS WRs.
- Produce and oversee construction prints, validate alignment of TEC equipment with third‑party infrastructure, and submit required GIS prints to regulatory agencies.
- Prepare construction cost estimates, calculate projected revenue, and determine Contribution‑in‑Aid‑of‑Construction (CIAC) charges to customers based on TEC revenue shortages or excesses.
- Inspect energized equipment, install current/voltage recording devices, troubleshoot voltage complaints using recording instruments, and implement voltage monitoring solutions.
- Investigate the integrity of TEC distribution facilities, determine necessary replacements or upgrades, and interpret plans for large projects involving road widening, intersection improvements, and infrastructure relocations.
- Required:
Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET‑accredited university. - Preferred:
Focus in Mechanical, Electrical, Civil, or Industrial Engineering.
- Preferred:
Completed or eligible to sit for the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE).
- Team environment leadership and initiative.
- Ability to work under direct supervision on routine assignments with varying scope and complexity following established policies and procedures.
- Experience with Tampa Electric or another utility company.
- Ability to Learn, Customer Service Orientation, Judgment, Planning and Organization, Teamwork.
Work is both indoor and outdoor in varying weather conditions, involving customer interaction and staff collaboration.
Physical DemandsField work with energized areas, rough terrain, lifting up to 50 lbs., wearing fire‑resistant clothing and personal protective equipment for an 8‑hour day.
