Student Success Coach
Job Description
At WGU, the Student Success Coach supports the success of WGU Academy students by helping them complete required college‑level courses and develop confidence, study habits, emotional wellbeing, and communication skills. The coach will guide students one‑on‑one and in group settings through the readiness curriculum, fostering a community that helps them successfully complete rigorous college courses and graduate.
Job Profile SummaryThe Student Success Coach's two main objectives are to:
- Help assigned students complete the required college‑level courses before enrolling full‑time into WGU or other institutions.
- Develop students' confidence, study habits, emotional wellbeing, and communications skills for long‑term academic success.
- Provide coaching and support for an average student load set by department standards and guide progress in completing two or more college‑eligible courses over 2–4 months.
- Leverage motivational interviewing techniques to influence positive behavioral change.
- Facilitate the Academy's college‑success readiness curriculum delivered during the first month, including online modules, group coaching, assignments, and personal coaching sessions.
- Lead virtual small‑group sessions to build community and inspire students.
- Encourage and celebrate milestones of assigned students.
- Collaborate with the team of Success Coaches, supporting teammates and providing input on improvement opportunities.
- Embrace WGU Leadership Principles, emphasizing learning, courage, and student obsession.
- Analyze data to improve student success and team productivity.
- Assist students with Academy systems and solve administrative problems.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Establish empathy, active listening, optimism, and genuine care for student success.
- Demonstrate high energy and enthusiasm for virtual group sessions.
- Create strong rapport and communication abilities, especially via web conferencing.
- Promote a strong work ethic with attention to detail.
- Work independently with minimal supervision while engaging in continuous improvement cycles.
- Show courage focused on student and team best interests.
- Champion change and demonstrate flexibility in ambiguous environments.
- Have intermediate experience with sophisticated technology systems.
- Have foundational knowledge of coaching and positive psychology principles.
- Achieve operational targets within job areas impacting department or function results.
- Work independently on moderately complex projects with guidance for complex tasks.
- Set self‑objective goals to meet project or assignment goals.
- Implement adjustments or enhancements to systems and processes to solve problems or improve effectiveness.
- Address problems requiring an understanding of broader issues and job areas.
- Collaborate with contacts within the job area to obtain or provide information requiring explanation or interpretation.
- Provide guidance and assistance to entry‑level professionals or support employees.
- Demonstrate WGU leadership principles in all service aspects.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree.
- Accredited coaching certification.
- Experience facilitating, presenting, or teaching in a remote online environment.
- At least 3 years of coaching experience.
- ICF Accredited Coach Training or NBHWC.
- Experience supporting adult learners in distance learning environments.
- Experience working with at‑risk learners.
- Familiarity with Salesforce or other customer relationship management tools.
- One year of professional experience in a high‑volume coaching center serving clients remotely OR minimum of one year employed at WGU Academy with advanced proficiency in motivational interviewing demonstrated consistently for at least six months.
- Two years of professional experience teaching or facilitating groups OR advanced proficiency delivering social‑emotional learning curriculum consistently for at least six months.
