Position Details

The Music Department within the College of Arts and Letters at the University of Tampa seeks a full-time Tenure Track Assistant Professor of Music - Director of Music Education/Director of Bands to begin August 2026.

This position will provide instruction and coordination for the music education program, direct the wind ensemble, provide essential leadership for the wind and percussion area, and fulfill other departmental instructional needs. We seek a faculty member with a passion for music education, who will work to maintain a high-quality collegiate wind and percussion program. The successful candidate will also be willing to participate in recruitment and outreach activities on and off campus, including but not limited to summer camps, clinics, All County and Honor Band conducting engagements.

Additional teaching responsibilities may include, depending on experience and department needs: general education music courses, music theory courses, instrumental methods courses, and/or applied music lessons.

Minimum Qualifications
  • A terminal degree in Music is required
  • Master's or doctoral degree in music education K-12
  • Degree in instrumental conducting or equivalent professional experience
  • At least three years of successful, relevant prekindergarten through grade 12 teaching, student services, or school administration experience
  • Specialized training in clinical supervision (for instructing and supervising preservice field experience courses and internships)
  • Demonstrated success as a band director
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstration of a commitment to conducting at a high level (invited engagements, participation in masterclasses, professional conducting experience)
  • Successful record of teaching experience at the college level
  • Evidence of and/or commitment to outreach and recruitment
  • ABD or doctoral degree in instrumental conducting or music education K-12

  • A link to a recent 15-minute video of the candidate rehearsing a wind ensemble, and a link to a video conducting a wind ensemble performance. All videos should be facing the conductor from the ensemble's point of view, should portray a variety of styles and should be from a reasonable distance.
  • A statement of teaching philosophy, copies of graduate degree transcripts, and contact information (name, phone numbers, and emails) for three professional references will be required at subsequent stages for finalist candidates.
