Launch your career with our dynamic Power Plant Control Room Operator apprenticeship! Gain hands-on experience, learn from industry experts, and build the skills and confidence to take on exciting challenges-all while advancing through a structured program that rewards your growth and mastery.
What You'll Do:
* Participate in hands-on training, both in the classroom and on the job, to build a strong foundation in power plant operations.
* Learn and demonstrate operational skills across a variety of generating systems, including steam, combustion, reciprocating engines, combined cycle units, and auxiliary systems.
* Assist in the safe operation of generating units by regulating output, synchronizing units, and maintaining proper voltages and power factor.
* Support switchyard operations, including opening and closing circuit breakers and performing equipment clearances, following all safety procedures.
* Maintain accurate documentation of unit operations and keep work areas organized and clean.
* Contribute to plant safety and environmental efforts by participating in hazardous material response, oil spill response, and permit-required maintenance activities.

High School Diploma or GED

Special Requirements
* Must be at least 18 years of age.
* Must be medically certified to wear a respirator and pass a respirator fit test prior to employment.
* An employee assigned to the Purdom Power Plant, or who may be occasionally required to have unescorted access to the Port Facility portion of the Purdom Power Plant, as determined by the General Manager-Electric & Gas, must obtain Transportation Workers Identification Credentials (TWIC) within 90-days of employment, and must maintain such credentials throughout his/her period of employment in that capacity as a condition of continued employment.
* Must possess a valid Class E State driver's license at time of appointment.
* Individuals in this classification must be able to work rotating shifts of 12 hours in length that cover 24 hours a day 7 days a week.
* Individuals in this classification must be available to serve on-call and are subject to having to work outside of their assigned shift/schedule to meet operational needs.
* Individuals in this classification are considered essential during emergency and storm situations and must be able to work 16 hours per day for extended periods of time and may be required to be away from their family.
* Must be able to distinguish between red and green.
* Applicants for this classification must be able to pass the City of Tallahassee-Electric & Gas Utility pre-employment screening and assessment program.
