Job Overview

As a skilled machinist at Ingersoll Rand, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving our large Liquid Ring Vacuum Pumps & Compressors. You will be part of a team that values creativity, excellence, and collaboration.

Responsibilities
  • Perform set‑ups of large liquid ring vacuum pump components and operate large vertical & horizontal lathes to repair and overhaul pumps and compressors.
  • Interpret blueprints and drawings to determine critical dimensions.
  • Read micrometers, vernier calipers, dial indicators, and other precision measuring equipment.
  • Maintain tolerances as specified, including tolerances as low as .0005".
  • Select appropriate cutting tools and determine speeds and feeds for proper surface finish.
  • Work overtime, including weekends, as required.
  • Operate forklift and overhead crane safely within the machine shop environment, adhering to EH&S & QMS processes.
  • Lifting and rigging heavy components, assisting in disassembly, reassembly, repair, and rebuilding of large liquid ring vacuum pumps.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of machine setup and machine controls.
  • 3+ years of experience as a machine operator or machinist.
  • 2+ years of experience reading and interpreting blueprints.
  • 1+ year of experience working on King‑style boring mills or VTLs.
  • Proficiency with a variety of tools and equipment, including depth gauges, bore gauges, height gauges, feeler gauges, micrometers, calipers, deburring tools, die grinders, drill presses, and overhead lifting equipment.

  • Prioritizing and meeting multiple deadlines.
  • Converting between metric and US standard units of measure.
  • Problem‑solving involving several variables.
  • Using standard problem‑solving methods (e.g., 5 Whys).
  • Sharing information effectively in one‑on‑one and small group settings with supervisors, customers, and coworkers.
Preferences
  • HS Diploma or GED preferred; higher education or certificates are a plus.
  • Experience with manual machining such as VTL/boring mill or horizontal lathe (King or Cincinnati brand).
  • Proven ability to set up and operate manual machines with in‑process offset adjustments.
Travel & Work Arrangements

This position is 100% onsite at our Moody, AL facility.
