Job Description

JOB TITLE: COUNSELOR - ELEMENTARY (Grant Funded)

JOB DESCRIPTION NARRATIVE: The guidance program functions as part of the total educational program. The chief purpose of the program is to assist students in recognizing their individual needs and values, to understand how they affect the goals they seek, and identifying and developing a course of action designed to master these goals. In helping students to develop a realistic "self‑concept" and utilizing his/her individual capacities, our program also assists faculty and administrators in "knowing" the individual needs and encouraging educational, vocational, social and personal data records and evaluation results which are utilized by the entire staff.

Qualifications

Qualifications: Master's degree with current Oklahoma Guidance/Counseling certification or working toward counseling certification currently or willing to enroll and commit to counseling program to complete in three years.

Knowledge: Broad range of successful teaching experience. Knowledge of current guidance/counseling practices and techniques as they apply to the elementary student. Broad knowledge of developmental and educational psychology and their application to the elementary child.

Skills: Must possess clerical skills, filing, typing, and computer/word processor.

Machines/Equipment: Computer, printer, typewriter, calculator, copy machine.

Essential Job Functions
  • Develop and implement an elementary guidance program which is designed to assist students in their personal/social and career/vocational development. This program will be organized with a preventive, instructional approach encompassing the competencies that elementary age children need to acquire.
  • Develop a guidance program based on the developmental needs of the K-6 learner.
  • Develop a preventive and pro‑active program.
  • Develop a coordinated program that is an integral part of the total school educational curriculum.
  • Develop a program which incorporates a delivery system involving counselors, teachers and the services of others integrated into a total program.
Performance Responsibilities
  • Assumes responsibility for planning, developing, and implementing preventive programs and services geared to meet elementary students' specific guidance needs through short‑term and long‑term goals.
  • Helps all students identify their abilities, achievements, and interests.
  • Assists students through individual counseling, small and large group guidance programs, classroom presentations, crisis intervention, referral or consultation services.
  • Consults with administrators and staff to identify at‑risk students and in need of services.
  • Provides leadership in both individual and group crisis situations and has available a crisis‑based team and resources in areas such as child abuse, family concerns, death, and chemical dependency.
  • Confers with parents whenever necessary and provides programs to give assistance in improving individual student performance in school.
  • Maintains close professional contact with referral agencies such as substance abuse specialists, social workers, mental health specialist, juvenile courts, clergy and health specialists that provide services for students and their families.
  • Keeps complete, up‑to‑date and accurate student and program records as required by law, policy, administrative regulations, and departmental guidelines.
  • Develops and coordinates activities which are designed to provide effective transition for new students and students moving to a new level.
  • Plans and implements guidance related activities and inservice programs for parents and staff.
  • Assists in the implementation of the District's Drug‑Free Schools and Community curriculum.
  • Serves as a school liaison on the Drug‑Free Advisory Board.
  • Coordinates (preparation and administration) the following school testing programs:
  • all‑school achievement testing
  • gifted/talented
  • special education
  • chapter I
  • referrals
