About The Position

Taft College is seeking a dedicated, student-focused Independent Living Skills Supervisor to join our nationally recognized Transition to Independent Living (TIL) Program
. The TIL Program offers a comprehensive post-secondary educational experience for students with developmental or intellectual disabilities, with an emphasis on independent living, employment readiness, and community integration. The TIL Student Support Coordinator plays a vital role in assisting with the daily operations and implementation of the program. Under general supervision, this position provides individualized support to students in developing essential life, social, and career skills to promote greater independence.

Duties

Duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinate the development of quarterly meetings and transition plans for students in the TIL program.
  • Provide direct supervision to Direct Support Coordinators (DSC).
  • Assist in creation of training materials and provide additional training and support for DSC staff.
  • Observes and assists in the assessment of student abilities and development of appropriate expectations in the areas of independent living.
  • Assists in the planning and implementation of community integration activities by coaching students in time management, budgeting, normal hygiene, grooming, work ethics, and employer expectations.
  • Serves as an advocate for disabled students with related community agencies and various components of the college community.
  • Develops and monitors independent living objectives in a group or individual setting.
  • Assisting students with Social Service agencies, Housing Services, Department of Rehabilitation and Job Developers.
  • Transport students to their future community to tour affordable housing, job sites and community resources.
  • Participate in all areas of new student enrollment (tours, intake, application, orientation, data entry, housing assignments etc.).
  • Assist in the intake process for the Center for Independent Living, including providing and assisting students and staff with appropriate forms; conducting tours and coordinating/participating in student interviews.
  • Maintain ISP data and review weekly or as needed.
  • Maintain ISP progress reports and review monthly or as needed.
  • Represent TIL at various conferences and outreach events to promote the program to prospective students and stakeholders.
  • Participate in Individual Program Plan meetings.
  • Coordinate schedules of students involved with various TIL programs.
  • Assists in the maintenance and retention of department records including student records.
  • Assists in the maintenance of department databases and web pages.
  • Assists in the development and revision of standard forms, fliers and documents.
  • Maintain timely performance evaluations and implements progressive discipline when needed.
  • Participate as on call status person for program outside of regular program hours.
  • Provide leadership and support for program staff in the implementation of programs goals and mission.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Employment Standards

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in a related field and 2 years’ experience working with adults who have developmental disabilities; or
  • Associates degree and 3 years’ experience working in a post-secondary setting or experience working with adults who have developmental disabilities.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Bi-Lingual Spanish/English
  • Ability to develop rapport with students who have developmental disabilities.
  • Willingness to assist students and promote good relationships.
  • Ability to show fairness and firmness in performing duties.
  • Ability to use tact and good judgment in decisions regarding students.
  • A team player in a busy educational environment with an emphasis on student success and public service.
  • Flexible and willing to assume other assignments as the need arises.
  • Possess the sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic background of community college students.
