Children's Center Teacher - Substitute

Position:
Substitute teacher for the Children’s Center. The role will begin with an initial full‑time assignment and will be as needed thereafter, ending on or before April 30, 2026
. Primary responsibilities include providing classroom supervision, planning curriculum and activities, directing Assistant and/or Associate Teachers, enforcing health and safety, assessing children, and maintaining records.

Representative Duties
  • Provide instruction and care for children aged 18 months through five years old, ensuring direct supervision at all times.
  • Coordinate, supervise and participate in children’s play activities and enforce safety rules.
  • Complete accurate and timely assessment records, anecdotal write‑ups and other reports by collecting appropriate data and recording observations.
  • Observe, record and report on each child’s behavior and development; conduct parent conferences.
  • Design and implement curriculum and lesson plans based on state content and performance standards.
  • Assist and model appropriate behavior and teaching techniques for and work effectively with Assistant and Associate Teachers, ECE practicum students, high school students and volunteers.
  • Arrange appropriate materials and supplies for classroom and playground activities; ensure a caring and safe learning environment.
  • Assist children with self‑care activities and maintain orderly environment.
  • Assist children who are having difficulty in the group or who temporarily lose physical or emotional control.
  • Maintain classroom supplies and perform general maintenance.
  • Assist with meals and snack service; record each meal service and model proper meal etiquette.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Prepare and develop curriculum, manipulatives, and learning activities.
  • Maintain confidentiality and security of student and classroom records.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid Child Development Teacher permit or higher from the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).
  • Understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of students, staff, faculty and the public.
Special Licenses/Certifications
  • Completion of California Department of Social Services (CDSS) licensing requirements.
  • Current pediatric CPR and first aid certificate from an accredited or approved program.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Bilingual in Spanish/English.
  • Experience working with young children and their families in a professional setting.
Physical Requirements
  • Vision sufficient to read documents and on computers.
  • Clear speech and hearing for communication.
  • Manual dexterity to use classroom supplies and assist children’s daily needs.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds, such as a child.
  • Ability to bend, reach and move effectively to facilitate classroom and playground activities.
  • Reasonable accommodations will be provided for candidates with physical disabilities.
Hours and Terms of Employment

Substitute assignment at 40 hours‑per‑week, ending on or before April 30, 2026
. Hours will be as needed thereafter. Overtime may be required, including evenings or weekends. Position dependent on funding by the State Department of Education and/or Department of Social Services.

Environment

Work is usually performed indoors in a classroom and outdoors on a controlled playground. Travel may be required for classroom field trips, workshops, training or meetings.

Compensation

Salary range: $22.14‑$28.88 per hour under the 2025‑2026 Classified Salary Schedule, Range 12.
