Role Overview
As a Senior Control System Engineer, you will be responsible for the detailed engineering design of control systems for projects of varying complexity within the Grid Automation Control System team. Your role will involve coordinating engineering assignments across the entire value chain, ensuring that projects are executed efficiently, cost‑effectively, and in accordance with contract specifications, quality standards, and safety requirements. You will play a crucial role in the design, integration, and implementation of control systems and act as the technical point of contact for customers and internal teams, demonstrating commercial awareness and supporting project management in issuing claims and managing risks.
Responsibilities- Manage the design, review, integration, installation, and testing of SCADA, RTU, PLC, Ethernet Switches, GPS, and Cyber Security solutions.
- Provide technical support to colleagues, customers, and sales teams.
- Demonstrate commercial awareness and support project management in issuing claims (new or change in scope of work, cost impact, time impact, risk quantifications, etc.).
- Act as the technical point of contact for customers and internal teams.
- Support manufacturer testing and Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) stages, as well as installation and commissioning activities.
- Assist in preparing project proposals and presentations.
- Support project management in issuing claims and managing risks.
- Possess solid knowledge of industrial communication protocols and standards such as IEC 61850, IEC 60870, DNP3, and Modbus.
- Experience in SCADA solutions, HMI development, programming, and RTU/IED integration.
- Understanding of UK electricity industry standards, especially National Grid, SSE/SPEN, DNO standards, and type registration/product approval processes.
- Over 5 years of experience using Copa Data (Zenon SCADA) within the electrical industry.
- Strong design capability and experience in the engineering discipline of control systems.
- Strong understanding of relevant communication protocols and computer interfaces:
Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, IEC 60870, and communication and network equipment. - Strong coordination and teamwork skills.
- Excellent communication skills with both internal and external teams and customers.
- Able to work well using your own initiative and a team‑player approach to achieve successful outcomes.
- Flexible attitude towards working hours, willingness to work additional hours and travel across the UK on short notice.
